Last week Nicky Morgan, the Secretary of State for Education, announced that UK schools are to be barred from ordering pupils to run around a playing field as punishment, saying "using exercise as a punishment threatens to have a negative impact on the sport and on the view young people take of it".
Paula Radcliffe echoed her sentiments stating "Physical activity is a joy, a pleasure rather than a means to improve bad behaviour."
Do you agree with these new exercise disciplinary measures? - share your thoughts - what do you practice in your school and why - share your teaching philosophy?
Getting pupils who hate sport to run laps as a punishment is counter productive. But when is a punishment a punishment? Asking pupils to redo poor academic work is the same surely? Or if you are taking a team of high performing sport loving nuts is it a punishment to have any sanction for coming second in a competition. Boys thrive on competition, as so many girl s,and whilst you could say reward the winners, that you do, is punishing the losers. Is it laps she has banned or all forms of punishment in schools. Strikes me as another knee jerk ill considered thought from an MP.

What a load of governmental drivel...again!
Obviously, the extra laps/circuit as a draconian measure is not condoned. However, as mentioned by some other contributors, it can create healthy competition and instil a competitive element to drive performers on.
Being involved in National Competitive Sport with my daughters, the experienced players they train with all do "extra laps" as a mini penalty in warm up activities. Used constructively it is a good motivator.
