Tennis: inside out forehand

Live ball drill<BR>Players start in centre play back an inside out forhand back to the coach, then the player runs onto the short ball and hits a forehand cross court winner.

Players start in the centre and hits the first shot back to the coach with an inside out forehand. The player then moves on to a short ball to hit a winner, either a cross-court forehand or a down the line stroke.

Players are working in groups of 3, with players 2 and 3 feeding and player 1 'working'.Player 1 is hitting one forehand cross and one forehand inside out to player 3.Player 2 is hitting one forehand down the line aiming for the red cone.Player 3 is hitting one backhand line into the target zone.The drill continues in this way with players rallying co-operatively for a certain length of time, 3 minutes for example, before rotating.

Coach feeds the balls to the 'ad' side. Player alternates hitting backhand down the line and forehand inside out.

2 players use backhands to rally together in cross court direction . Player A picks the right moment to surprise the opponent and hits forehand angle inside out. After putting the opponent outside of the alley player A takes the next ball and finishes with backhand down the line.Drill specifications:1-2 minutes and switch2 players can work on forehands and backhands at the same time so 1-2 minutes periods for switching are appropriate. Waiting players can perform some footwork exercises with the emphasis on running around footwork patterns based on crossover steps to improve the effectiveness of the angle shot while hitting.

The coach feeds the first ball in and then players have to keep the rally going, running around the ball to play a cross-court forehand into the coned area. So player 1 hits the ball to player 1 on the other team who then returns to player 2 and so on.

Player 1 is working in the whole court but primarily in the red target zone, hitting ONLY fhs: 1 fh cross, and 1 fh inside out. Player 2 is working in the fh corner and is hitting a forehand back to the centre of the court, middle of the red target zone. Player 3 is working in the bh corner and is hitting a backhand down the line to the outer edge of the red target zone. Player 3 feeds the ball in down the line, player 1 hits a fh cross, player 2 hits a fh down the middle, player 1 runs around the ball and hits an inside out fh back to player 3, and the pattern repeats.

Up to 4 players can be involved. The aim is to encourage players to progressively attack on the move. Coach feeds 3 balls to each player diagonally across the court. Feed 1 to the centre of the court, feed 2 slightly wider to the centre of the service box, and feed 3 wider towards the tramlines of the court. Players should use good footwork to get feet in the correct position around the ball to hit an inside out forehand straight back down the court. The drill should be continuous so as player A hits feed 2, player B is hitting feed 1.

The coach feeds 3 balls to the backhand side (deep, medium, short). The player hits forehand inside in and recovers to the middle after each shot.

Coach serves from deuce side to the T. Player runs around and hits forehand drop shot inside out.

Players are working in groups of three.Player 1 is the 'working' player and players 2 and 3 are feeding the ball.Player 1 must hit only forehands and must hit one shot inside out to player 3 and one shot inside in to player 2.Player 2 hits forehands line, player 3 hits backhands cross.

Player starts at the centre and plays inside out Forehand to opponunts backhand corner . Opponent then hits a backhand down the line. Players play out the rally.

Coach feeds three balls per player from the basket. Players should aim to hit the targets (as in diagram - can use cones to mark out targets). The aim is to encourage players to progressively attack on the move.

Coach feeds a ball to the deuce side. Player hits a forehand down the line.Coach feeds another ball to the center. Player hits an inside out forehand from the center.

Split the players into 2 equal groups, Both hitting forehands. Coach feeds left then right. Players have to move out to the ball and try to hit the ball into the coned are down the line. Play first team to score 10 points.

4 players. 2 on each side of the net. Player 1 hits a deep forehand,and a rally starts with each player hitting a deep forehand shot. When it is player 1's turn again they hit a deep backhand shot, and the rally continues. Rally alternates between forehand and backhand shots. Repeat the drill. The drill is continuous. 

Red cones are set on deuce side; yellow cones are set on the ad side. The coach throws balls to the ad side, and the player runs around and hits forehand inside out (yellow cone) or inside in (red cone). After the shot, the player recovers to the proper cone according to the shot's direction.

Player A hits forehand cross court, forehand inside out and forehand inside in. After this pattern both players play the point out.

Five cones set up at end of the court as shown. Coach feeds the ball to player A to hit with a forehand cross court shot into the target area. Player A to return to starting position ready for the next feed. Coach then feeds another ball across the court to the opposite side for Player A to hit an inside out forehand down the line to the target area. Player returns to starting position. Repeat drill so that Player A hits 4 shots, then joins the queue for Player B's turn.

Drill set-Up:Players start off on centre and moves around backhand for first forehand then moves off to play seconf forehand.Topic of Emphasis:Players should turn and prepare, back peddle for inside out forehand, then recovering and pushes off for second forehand.Variation:Players can alternate the direction of the balls, as well the coach can vary positions 1 - 3.

To work on their footwork players face away from the court and throw the ball over their shoulder into the advantage court. Once the ball has been thrown players should pivot and get around the ball to play an inside out forehand into the target area,
