Anticipation and tactical awareness

The court is marked out with cones into areas (e.g. red, amber and green). Players try to anticipate which area the ball is going to land in so that they can respond with the most appropriate tactical return. A buddie coach stands behind the player and tells them which shot they should play (ie. approach the net, lob etc.) depending on the area that they are hitting from i.e. where they are standing/ running on court as they hit the ball. Players will need to watch the body shape of the coach and the ball contact carefully to anticipate what type of shot is being hit and therefore where it is likely to land.

Approach and smash

-2 feeding players, with a basket in the middle.- Feed a short ball followed by a lob.- After the approach shot the player smashes the lob.

Backhand Smash

The coach feeds lob into the air for the player to hit back using the backhand smash. The player hits the smash down the line and joins the back of the line.

Doubles movement

-Player 2 starts with a second serve to advantage court.-Returner hits a lob return over player 1s head and follows it into the net.-Player 2 chases the lob and returns it down the line.-Player 1 moves to hot seat in the middle.-Returner hits cross court volley to player 1.-Player 2 comes to net and the point is played out.-The same drill can be repeated on the deuce side of the court.

-The game has two teams of four players each.-Each team consists of two lobbers and two smashers.The smashers must stand in their respective service courts.-Points are scored every time a lob falls between the base line and the service line.The baseliners must hit the ball after one bounce. Points are lost as in normal tennis.-First team to 5 wins.-The baseliners and the smashers swop over for the next game.

Passing shots

Starting with a feed to either forehand or backhand at random players play their first shot down the line after which the players can play out the point. No lobs allowed.

Sticky Volley and Lob

-Start off by placing a hoop in between the service line and the net(as shown in the picture).-Players 1 and 2 are playing out the point whilst player 3 is trying intercept the ball that player 2 is hitting.-The person at the net has to have at least one foot in the hoop at any one time. -The player on their own has to avoid the person at the net by hitting all the balls wide or lobbed. If the point is won by a volley extra points are awarded.-First one to 11 points and then swap around.

The Wall

4 players 2 at the net and 2 at the baseline. Coach feeds the ball in to the baseliners and the point is played out. The volleyers can hit anywhere, however the baseliners cannot hit to the same volleyer twice in a row. After 2 volleys the baseliners are then allowed to lob. The winner is the first team to 11 points, after this the teams swap over.

Doubles Drills

Topspin Lob

The coach feeds a deep ball to hitters. Players must hit a topspin lob and then return to the back of the line after their shot. With more advanced players the coach should feed the balls from the back of the opposite side of the court.

-One player is positioned on the service line, the other closer to the net.-Player 1 lobs every second shot and player 2 hits alternately volleys and smashes.-This is a warm up drill and players focus on keeping the ball in play.-The drill can be done with or without rackets.-Players swop round after approximately 3 minutes.

Player 1 must feed player 2 with a lob (deep if possible). Player 2 must hit the smash and play out the point. NOTE: The ball must not bounce on the side of player 2 throughout the point. Player 1 can hit drives or lobs after the initial lob feed. First player to reach 11 points wins.

The coach feeds a challenging ball across the court to player 1 who has to lob player 2 with a top spin lob. Player 2 starts at the service line and moves towards the net before trying to smash the return if they can reach it.

The player stands on the baseline. Cones mark the deep zone. The coach stands close to the net and feeds a drop shot to the backhand side and takes the racquet up. The player sprints forward and hits deep backhand slice lob off drop shot.

The coach feeds the ball to the backhand side, and the player hits backhand drop shot down the line and moves forward. The coach comes then to the net and feeds the ball to the backhand side. The player finishes with backhand volley lob cross-court.

Coach, 2 players, basket of balls. Coach feeds the ball to player 1 towards the centre of the baseline. Player 1 plays a forehand lob over player 2, who is stood on the T junction of the service box area, to land inside the court. Player 2 cannot leave the service box area, but can play the ball if they can reach it. Coach continues to feed another ball. Players rotate after 6 feeds.

Returning a smash Lob - Tennis...

Player feeds an easy lob to the coach, who then returns with a smash shot. The player has to return the coach's shot using a defensive lob and then a forehand slice - note the coach should hold his/her racquet obove his/her head after the smash to give the player a target to aim over. Repeat the drill, but the coach should hit the smash so the player has to return it using a backhand defensive shot and then a slice.

Player 1 is working in the full court and player 2 in half court, starting with the backhand corner.The coach (or player 3) feeds a very short ball/ dropshot that player 1 must chase down and push back deep into the corner where player 2 is waiting.Player 2 must then attempt to hit a winning topspin lob aggressively over player 1 who has moved to the net after playing the dropshot.Player 1 can try to chase down the lob if it goes over their head or smash/ volley it away into the backhand corner if the lob is not good enough.Players switch ends before repeating the drill to the other corner.

The loop and sneak: Cat and mo...

Players are rallying up and down the centre of the court in the usual way.When either player decides to, they can change the flight path of the ball and hit an aggressive topspin loop to push the opposing player to the back off the court.The point is then live and the players play first to 11 points.The player who has hit the aggressive loop can wait to see what damage their shot has done to their opponent before deciding where to position themselves on the court.If the loop has been played well and deep, the player may look to sneak into the net after it as it is likely the opponent will hit a weak reply.However if the loop has not been hit deep enough it may provide the opponent with a slower midcourt ball so the player must be ready to defend if this is the case.

1) In this drill there are two hitters, two shadows, and the remaining students wait in the alley.<br />2) The drill starts with the hitters hitting the net.<br />3)The teacher then hits a lob for hitter 1 to smash.<br />4)While hitter 1 goes for smash, hitter 2 and both shadows, shadow his movements.<br />5) The teacher hits the second lob to hitter 2. Once again, the other 3 hit the net and shadow movement back for smash.<br />6) This is repeated twice. Each hitter hits 2 smashes.<br />7) After his second smash the hitter goes to the end of the waiting line of students. His shadow moves to the hitting position, and a waiting student becomes the shadow.<br />8) Smashes should be hit cross-court, away from teacher!!<br />9) Emphasis should once again be on control and movement.
