Set Up Mark out a rectangle using cones 5m long x 1.5m wide. Place a football in the centre of the rectangle. Two players start in the middle of the grid, standing back-to-back and facing opposite directions. Execution On the coach's whistle, both players sprint around the cone at their end of the grid. After rounding the cone, players accelerate back towards the football. The first objective is to win possession of the football. The player who reaches the ball first must secure possession and attempt to break clear. The second player immediately becomes the defender and must apply a legal tackle or pressure to stop the ball carrier. Play continues until a clean tackle is made, the ball is disposed of, or the coach calls the drill complete.
Explode off the whistle. Stay low and balanced when approaching the football. Attack the ball first, not the opponent. Secure possession before looking to evade. Defenders should close space quickly and apply strong tackling technique. Keep the feet moving through the tackle and finish the contest. Key Focus Competitive ground ball winning. First-to-the-footy mentality. Tackling pressure and defensive reaction. Contest work under pressure.
