Hockey: positional unit play

I love using Sportplan. It's been a great help for co-ordinating hockey...
Laura, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

Start by putting your players in their position on  half a pitch. (whateve the formation you want to play.)

Give one of the players a ball and ask the team to pass the ball around the team as fast as they can. This should start to get players used to the players around them.

COACHING POINTS

It is very important to tell players that they should use the players close to them and not try unrealistic passes i.e. right defence to left wing.

With young teams it is important to limit each players pass options to a max of 3 or even 2, this will help with the players speed of moving the ball on due to the fact that they do not have to think of a better option all the time.

PROGRESSION

Once the team is used to passing one ball around you can add another ball for a while.

Discuss the leads players may want to use, and how they can manipulate space for other players
