The player move side-to-side between the cones, and alternates crossing the cones with outside leg and with both legs.
Ability to quickly change direction is a priority in modern tennis because of the speed of the game. Players have to learn how to quickly push from the outside leg and move to the other side without using too many steps. This drill is a good exercise to work on speed, quickness and change of direction.
