DESCRIPTION

Coach serves wide from the ad side.
Player returns using a backhand drop shot down the line.

COACHING POINTS

Returning from ad side is based on backhand return because opponents tend to hit wide serves to open the court and avoid the forehand.
It is important to know that usually the return will be played cross-court so they move a little to the backhand side to prepare.
By hitting a well-placed drop shot down the line, we can surprise the opponent.

OFTEN USED WITH...

Backhand Live drill:

Coach feeds the ball from the forehand side of the court.

Players start in the centre and hit the first backhand back to the coach. The player should try to recover back to the centre to then move towards the short ball and hit a backhand cross-court.

Backhand Drills

One Stands Alone:

The coach stands on one side of the court. Students line up.

The first student hits ball to the coach and then moves to end of the line.

Point continues with students alternating.

Backhand Drills

Quick Change:

Coach stands in front of the player and feeds random balls (Forehand, Backhand, Low, Short, Deep etc). Player has to react and adjust to incoming balls.

Movement

Out of Position:

Coach feeds balls to the backhand side. Player hits backhand slice angle cross court.
