Hockey: All cross-court shots

Excellent, used the drills at our first training session today with...
Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Player stands on the service line.
  • Coach alternates feeding to the forehand and to the backhand side.
  • Player hits all volleys in cross-court direction.

COACHING POINTS

In this drill player works on controlling volleys in cross-court direction. Cross-court shot is a priority in doubles (player uses this shot while coming to the net) but it is also effective in singles because it can give big advantage over rivals who don’t like to be under pressure. Coach should remind players to focus on control because power is not the best option while chosing cross-court direction (court is open for easy down the line passing shot). Cones should always be on the court to make players aware of their effectiveness.
