Basketball: Lay up step 1 - Inner corner shooting

DESCRIPTION

This is the first step to teaching a lay -up.

Using the correct shooting teachnique players must aim to hit the top corner of the little black square on the backboard. If they are standing on the right side, this will be the right corner, on the left, the left corner.

COACHING POINTS

Emphasise if the players do hit the backboard in the correct place the ball should go in every time.

Lay up step 2 - One step lay up:

This is the 2nd step to teaching a lay up.

From the right side (as in the example) player takes one step forward with their left foot and then drives the right knee up (as if their elbow and knee were attached with a piece of string) to finish the lay up they aim for the little black square on the backboard, as in step one.

Lay up step 3 - Two steps:

The third step to teaching a lay up.

From the right side the player takes a step with their right foot and then continues with step 2 followed by step one.

On the left side, it should be one step with the left, then the right.

Lay up with hand off:

The idea of this is to get the player to perform the correct footwork for the lay up without having to worry about the dribble.

One player stands to the side, holding the ball out for the player to take. (for the right hand side)

The shooter runs towards the ball, as they take the ball, they should beginning their first step with their right foot, they then take the second step onto their left and shoot as per lay up technique.
