Football: Lateral Footwork in the Goal

The best keepers in the world use their feet to make saves and to always be in the right position. Their agility and bounce comes from the timing and accuracy of their footwork. Work your keepers with this session.

• GK starts on knees with server 3 yards away.
• Set up cones slightly wider than where the GK can reach with a dive.
• Server plays the ball above head of the GK and out to either side.
• GK has to use their top hand to tip the ball over or wide.

• Mark out a square with 4 cones 8yds by 8yds.
• Goalkeeper starts in the hoop. Then works round cones on the outside.
• Each time recieves a shot after they have stepped in the hoop with the nearest foot.

NOTE:

• Use cones to make a smaller square if you do not have a hoop

• Set up 1 hurdle with 2 cones either side to indicate where the step is to be taken, then a wider cone to indicate the goal
• Goalkeeper jumps over the hurdle and into set position
• Takes one small step with nearest foot then goes into dive

• Set up a line of cones across front of goal with two cones placed further forward and wide to the line of cones. Servers set outside area off to one side of the cones.
• Goalkeeper first time round two feet between the cones, second hop between cones, third time double stepping side on to cones. 
• Once footwork performed, goalkeeper has to get round the furthest cone and then back into line to save the shot
• GK makes the save then joins back of Server line
• Server joins GK Line
