How do I get high school girls to be more aggressive and play with more intensity?
You could try getting all the girls in a section of the key, each dribbling a ball and they have to try and protect it at the same time as trying to steal each other's. If they lose their ball, they're out, last one in wins. Also getting them to work in pairs with people they are most comfortable with doing 1 v 1. This way they may be able to feel they can be more aggressive and will not be so worried about personal space or whatever stops them from being aggressive. It might also be worth trying 1 attacker vs 2 defenders to encourage them to drive to basket and this should mean they have to be more aggressive.
I think that if you can get them into as many game type situations BEFORE the actual game is always good. I tend to get my girls to go 2 on 2 in the keyhole and you can only get out of the "scrimmage" situation if you score a bucket...makes them work to get off court
I let play a scrimmage over the foul court. When one girl is to late in defensive transition and her offender make a score, than their team do footwork for about 48 sec. ( 2 x 24 sec)
