Why is it more important for guards to have excellent dribbling skills than it is for a centre?
In basketball especially at the grass routes and development level you, don't want to limit any players to a position as you wont be sure how tall or what position a player will play in the future. In general though guards will need to have better ball handling skills than forwards and centers because a team is reliant on the guards to bring the ball up the court, set the offense and get the ball to the other players in good scoring positions. That is why it is imperative guards have great ball handling skills. Center's in general will spend most of their time close to the basket where they will not be able to take more than 1 or 2 dribbles. Guards need to be better because they will be dribbling the ball a lot more of the game than any other position. But if you are coaching the u16 level, all players should be taught to dribble the ball like a guard. Then later on in the players development, when they have finished growing you may specialize them to play a position like center.
