If your players are old enough, you can teach them the difference between zone defense and man to man defense.
I like instructing half my defense to play zone defense (that helps to protect the 6, since they are not marking anyone specifically) and then the others are marking man to man. This requires good communication as to whom is going to clear the ball. (Have players shout of MINE! or GOT IT! before clearing the ball.
