Hello, I have recently began coaching for a new club but their is a language barrier between some of the players and myself so they find it difficult to follow instructions. What methods of communication or drills can I use to overcome this? Thank you for your help. Harry
Hi Harry,
Initially, it`s a great idea to create a buddy system in the team. Use senior players to pair them with those who have a language barrier. This will help them ask questions and ensure they get the message during meetings etc. They are likely to ask their buddy if they don`t understand, rather than the coach in front of the whole team.
Understand that visually, the message will come across much more successfully. Drawing plays and making points this way will help avoid any confusion and when explaining things, reduce any jargon or specific phrases to save overcomplicating the communications.
Another method coaches use is to give those who speak a different language more responsibility in the team. This forces them to communicate and learn but also boosts their confidence, helping them learn the language quicker and making the process less intrusive quicker.
I hope this helps!
