Hi Rick,
The best way to groove the 4-4-2 formation to youngsters would be to use the full pitch and split it up into 3 equal thirds. Set your defenders up in the bottom third, midfields in the middle third and strikers in the final third. Then get them to pass the ball amongst each other between the thirds, not moving too much from their starting position.
You can also get them to take up the 4-4-2 formation and practice moving up and down the pitch as a unit but maintaining distance between each other.
