I coach under 7s and i was wondering if anyone has any warm up drills to do at the start of training since i feel that we do almost the same every week and want to try something new has anyone any ideas
I find that with younger age groups its about having the ball at their feet and not about making them run although little games of tag or stuck in the mud can be fun. I find adapting games like "whats the time mr wolf" so the players dribble the ball towards the goal, you as the coach play the role of the wolf once they are close enough they get to take a shot at you (most will miss) But can lead in to a drill about shooting/passing accuracy.
I tend to use the same warm up for both training and match days. Each player has a ball each and within a marked area they then move around the area. Slowly at first and then the coach shouts instructions, left foot only, right foot only, both feet, inside turn, outside turn, etc. This can then be expanded further as you go through the age groups.
Playing tag is always a good one for U7`s and you do that in a defined penalty area.
Getting the team in a circle and having one ball is a good one as well. Call, Pass, Control and repeat. Make sure everyone gets a touch of the ball. Then enhance it by getting the player passing the ball to follow the pass and stand behind the player receiving it. Keep the activity moving at all times and then introduce a 2nd ball to mix things up.
Thanks for the help and ideas
