What positioning should a back 4 take up when the opposition is constantly trying to play long balls over the top of our defence. Positioning before ball is played and immediate reaction positioning if our 2 centre halfs win the ball in the air
First you will need the 2 center backs to be good with the ball in the air (clearing/redirecting with headers).Second if they know that the opposition is trying to penetrate with long balls over their heads, they have to kep the forwards in front of them and have the outside backs tuck in a bit.If you have speedy backs you will win most of these long balls and the GK has to be very vocal for pass backs or clearing/passing the ball to the outside. There is no need to change the shape in the back if your defenders are disciplened. I hope this will help.
