Teaching 12-13yr olds the basic skills needed to play a match

There are a number of pupils in my class that don't know the basic skills needed to play football, they lack the skills needed and the discipline. Because of that I'm asking if any of you have some ideas what to do?

Ideally I need ideas on what to do to help get my class into shape and to start learning the basics.

Hi Reece,

The best place to start on site is with the search bar. This should be at the top of the page - this will find you drills, answered coach's questions and lesson plans.

To save you time searching I've collected together some resources which I found with the search bar, to help you get started:

Drill: Pass and move (great for teaching players to pass and carry the ball - can easily be adjusted for juniors)

Answer: How to stop players choosing the wrong pass?

Answer: Where to start with my U12s?

Lesson plan: Dribbling and passing for U10s

I hope these links help - there's plenty more ideas on site, so please have a look around and let us know if you have any other questions.

Your session could look something like this:

1. Warm up with the ball - ball mastery, lots of touches. 10 minutes

2. Technical practice - suggest basic dribbling or passing drills. 10 minutes

3. Skill related - based on the theme of the session - i.e.; dribbling or passing. so if dribbling, could do 1v1 drills where there`s pressure and they`re forced to dribble. 10 minutes

4. match related SSG - based on the theme again, so if dribbling could do 3v3 where to score they have to dribble into end zones or through gates. 15 minutes

5. Match - with emphasis on applying learning on theme - i.e.; reward good dribbling somehow. 15 minutes

Discipline is a minefield but these could help:

1. Making sure they understand the rules - like listen when you`re talking, follow your instructions, always try your best and respect others etc.

2. Give warnings and timeouts if the rules in 1 aren`t followed and don`t give them as much match time.

3. Give praise and rewards to those that follow rules.

4.Avoid line drills and use as many drills as possible that keep them moving around.
