i want mid and strikers to feel like they can roam anywhere to create space or opportunity. Problem is they are so set in positional play they struggle to think outside square or trust team mates will cover zones
start with a thre man defense drill to follow a ball going from one side to another keeping a triangle formations maintaining the slow down opponent cover pass and then move to a 2v3defense then a 3v3 then a 3defense 4 offensive players (having offside rule) then 3v5 this with quickness drills to develop quickness and rapid response will help you
You could try setting up a conditioned game where the 3 full backs always have a man up (so no more than two forwards in final third at any time).
This way they should always be able to pass their way out of danger and use triangles to move the ball out of defence and to start an attacking move.
Thanks Alex great suggestion I will try this. I think the backs I have are so used to playing 4 at back that they are hesistant to try a new perspective on how to play. is tricky...any other suggestions would be welcomed
