Football: conditioning

April 2026 Sportplan Coaching

Modern handball requires athletes to be powerful, quick, and durable. The physical demands include explosive jumping for shooting, rapid direction changes in defence, and the strength to absorb and deliver contact. Conditioning programmes must be handball-specific to develop these qualities effectively.

Power Development

Explosive performance foundations:

Jump training: Plyometrics develop vertical explosiveness for shooting and blocking.

Throwing power: Medicine ball and resistance training for shot velocity.

First-step speed: Acceleration training for offensive and defensive transitions.

Landing mechanics: Safe deceleration to prevent knee and ankle injuries.

Endurance for Handball

Sustaining performance throughout matches:

Intermittent capacity: Repeated high-intensity efforts with brief recovery.

Active recovery: Maintaining movement quality as fatigue accumulates.

Match simulation: Training at game intensity for appropriate durations.

Tournament readiness: Multiple matches over consecutive days.

Strength Training

Upper body: Shoulder stability and arm strength for throwing and contact.

Core strength: Transfer power from legs to arms, maintain balance under contact.

Lower body: Explosive legs for jumping, cutting, and absorbing contact.

Grip strength: Ball control and secure catching.

Injury Prevention

Shoulder care: Rotator cuff strengthening for throwing demands.

Knee stability: ACL prevention programmes for landing and cutting.

Ankle strength: Proprioception training for court surfaces.

Recovery protocols: Sleep, nutrition, and active recovery between sessions.

Key Coaching Points

  • Conditioning must be handball-specific, not generic fitness
  • Power development supports all handball actions
  • Injury prevention is training, not optional extra work
  • Recovery is part of the conditioning programme
  • Monitor training load to prevent overtraining

Team thrashed every week - where to start?

Team keep getting thrashed every week - where to start? Having been the sole coach/manager of a little league team for the past two years, this year I lost all my senior players. I was therefore presented with 10 brand new lads, some of whom have never played competitive football. We are 8 games in and my lads are getting thrashed every week. The main problems are that they cannot get the ball out of their half, positions are usually a mess, finishing and chance creation are non-existent, and they don't apply any pressure or are unable to tackle. The main problems are keeping the ball as a team, getting it in the opponents half and staying there, and creating/finishing chances. I only have 1 and a half hours a week with them. I don't really know what to do, and I'm a little desperate. Does anybody have any advice? Thanks for literally anything.

How to instill confidence and belief - going from 9 a side to 11 a side

Our under 12's have made the jump from 9 a side to 11 a side. We have entered a big city league were results are hard to come by. We play a super 1st half and lose it massively 2nd half, through heads down & fitness. Any suggestions on confidence boosting & training drills to help steady a ship. We are playing a 4 - 2 -3 - 1 formation.Yes we are getting a bit of negativity from the parents to, which does not help. Thank you in advance.

How much fitness work is required for U12's

This is my first season coaching u12's - I have a lot of experience with coaching younger children in which I concentrated on skills, ball work etc (90%). Just wondering does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how much fitness work is req'd for 11 and 12 year olds.

Long Ball Defending for U11s Help

I run a U11 team that is reasonably successful and plays with confidence and spends a lot of the time on the front foot. However we seem to get caught week after week by the simple long ball over the top and would welcome some tips/drills to help the lads improve this part (it's driving me mad!). Thanks in advance.

First time Coaching Gig

Hello All,I will be coaching my daughter's U16 Div 2 team this year, I just wanted to ask fellow coaches and mangers what to expect. I'm not new to the game, in fact I currently play in the state league myself, but there is a difference between playing the game and actually managing the team. I guess my questions lie around team management techniques and what should I look out for or what should I be aware of? The season starts in a month and training commences next week, so what is the best way to get the kids in shape fast? Thank you.
