3 vs 3 Football

Each teams has 3 players and one goal to defend and one to attack. The ball is not allowed to stop or go over head height. By passing and dribbling the ball players must try to score three goals - first to three wins!

Conditioned games

8 v 8 four goal game

Objective: To change the direction of attack by turning in a small sided game. Detail: Half pitch practice with 4 goals (as shown in diagram). Split the group into 2 teams of 8 with no GK's. Play 8 v 8 with each team attacking and defending 2 goals. Emphasis on changing the direction of attack my turning towards another goal.

Gather the roll - Both Side

Two players work with 1 ball. The feeder rolls the ball to the keeper's side. The feed can be made to either side. The keeper should react to the roll and dive in a controlled manner to their side, stretching out to catch the ball and then roll it back to the feeder, ready to start again.

Two players work with 1 ball. The feeder rolls the ball consecutively to the keeper's right-hand side. The keeper should dive in a controlled manner to their side, stretching out to catch the ball and then roll it back to the feeder, ready to start again.

Jump and Catch - Two Shot Stopper

The keeper jumps sideways over the three gates, and then moves quickly into the center of the goal ready to catch the first feeder's shot which is played high to stretch the keeper. The keeper then plays the first ball back out and moves to meet the second ball which is played hard and low along the ground. The keeper dives to stop this shot, rolls it back out again and then jogs back to the start - ready to repeat again.

Can be used with one or more keepers simultaneously. Place a ball on either side of your keepers, within diving reach. Your keepers should be stood in the middle of these two balls on their cones. When the coach / player gives the signal (stretching a hand out to the left or the right) your keepers should react as quickly as possible and dive to catch the ball on that side.

Speed Sidesteps

Players run towards each other, and then sidestep around each other at the last moment. Ensure players communicate and decide on a direction of sidestepping before they begin the exercise. This is important that both players pay attention to avoid any collisions.

Through Ball in the Triangle

Set up a rectangle, 15x10m, with a player on each corner plus two defending players inside the grid with bibs on. The outside players must try to stretch the two defenders in order to make space for the diagonal pass. In order to do this they can pass laterally and use dummy passes to send the defenders. Players keep count of how many diagonal passes they have completed.

Wembley Singles/Doubles

Objective: Get players physically prepared for the session through a fun activity linked to the sessions goals. Detail: Set up a 30 x 40 area with 4 goals (on the 40 side). Split the players into 4 groups of 4 with a goal and ball each. Explain the game of wembley singles and/or doubles (1v1 or 2v2). If playing singles use a spare player as a goal keeper. However if playing doubles tell the players that Team A starts with the ball by the goal & plays out to Team B who can then attack. Rotate around accordingly. Stop after every couple of mins for dynamic stretches (open/close the gate, lunges, hip rotations, backwards lunges & punters).

Zig-Zag

Set up cones in a zig-zag formation. Groups of 6 are stationed on the endline. 1 ball per group. The dribblers move up, then back down the cones performing inside and outside of the foot turns to get back to their team. Inside of the foot, chop on the way up, outside hook on the way down. Make it a race between the groups.

The red player attacks the blue player in the area between the blue cones. The blue player cannot tackle but can only put red player under pressure.

Turn and Pass 2 Passing and Re...

In groups of minimum of 4. Set out the 2 goals behind which each team stands. 1 player from one group goes to the centre square of cones to receive the ball from the other side. They receive the ball, turn and pass the ball through the gate to their partner to score a point. Then the player from the other team runs into the centre square to receive the ball and turn to pass the ball through the gate to their partner.

6 players work in an area approximately 30 meters wide, divided in two with a third boxed area at one end. Red team play a 3 v 1 inside the first area but need to look for early deep ball to blue (3) in smaller coned area. The Blue team has also got a player (2) in the centre zone this player can not enter the area where the reds are keeping possession.

Keeping Triangle Goalkeeping -...

Standing on the first cone of the triangle the keeper catches the volleyed ball into their body and then throws it back out to the feeder. They then move around the next cone. After they've run around the second cone the second feeder passes the ball along the floor at the third cone. The keeper dives low to catch the ball and then returns it before getting to their feet to catch the third ball which has been passed to the first cone by the third feeder. Drill continues in this way.
