Tennis: Control Point Of Contact

Great drills and practices thank you. Have used to great success for...
Steve, Clayesmore Prep School

DESCRIPTION

  • Player stands at the net. Coach feeds balls to the backhand side.
  • Coach hits controlled backhand volley and looks at point of contact.
  • Coach should adjust the speed of feeding to allow player “fix” own eyes at the moment of hitting the ball.

COACHING POINTS

  • In this drill, player works on backhand volley control.
  • Being at the net gives less time for reaction for both the hitting and receiving player.
  • For hitting player, it means that more focus has to be placed on clear point of contact to achieve solid control and to direct the ball into the proper area on the court.
  • By having the goal of watching the point of contact, the player is not only focused more on this aspect but also is able to consciously correct mistakes like too big backswing or improper distance to the ball.
