Tennis: Inside-out Forehand

DESCRIPTION

Coach feeds the ball down the line
The player starts in the middle and runs round to hit an inside-out cross court forehand to the target area
Alternatively a target can be positioned down the line and every third stroke can be hit to that direction

COACHING POINTS

Use this drill to teach footwork and preparation for inside-out forehands i.e. for right handed players, the first step is the right leg going across and behind the left leg,and then running backwards. Emphasise turning of the shoulders whilst moving and then running with left shoulder facing the net.

The drill can also be constructed so that the player hits a short angle cross court with a slightly shorter feed.

Inside out forehand and winner:

Players start in the centre and hits the first shot back to the coach with an inside out forehand.

The player then moves on to a short ball to hit a winner, either a cross-court forehand or a down the line stroke.

Forehand Drills

Cross court inside-out forehands:

The coach feeds the first ball in and then players have to keep the rally going, running around the ball to play a cross-court forehand into the coned area.

So player 1 hits the ball to player 1 on the other team who then returns to player 2 and so on.

Forehand Drills

Deep cross court:

-The coach feeds down the line, the player runs to hit the ball cross court into the target area.
First player to 3 shots (or higher if more advanced players) wins the game.
-The drill can then be run similarly from the backhand corner.

Forehand Drills

Forehand to catch - get your eye in:

Players 1, 2 and 3 feed a ball underarm high over the net to 4, 5 and 6. Players 4, 5 and 6 have rackets and must try and hit the balls back for their partners to catch. After six turns they change around.
