What are the best cricket coaching tips and games for kids aged 5 and 6. I am starting coaching this year and want to help keep 30 5 and 6 year olds happy and enthused for an hour or two each Sunday
James, here are a couple of drills that I use when coaching young children.
It isn't easy! At this age the average attention span is very minimal, the most important thing is don't stress if all the kids arn't cooperating at once. You will need helpers. Teenage helpers are great and you can notice them learning heaps by helping. Keep games/drills basic and use colour coded cones to get kids standing in the right places. It is easy to tell the kids to 'stand on a cone' rather than explain to them where to stand. Don't keep them doing one thing for too long. A whistle helps also. Good luck!
A game variation I use to keep everyone involved is to put two lines of cones approx 10M-15M apart at a right angle to the striker's wicket behind the wicketkeeper. One batsman is on strike and faces a number of underarm throws from the coach (say 4 or 5) before the next batsman comes in. The rest of the batting team stand behind one set of cones and the fielding team take up positions as normal. If the batsman hits the ball and thinks he can run he has to shout 'run' to his team mates. ALL of them then have to run to the other cones before the fielding team returns the ball to the end the batsmen is running to. If the batting team are successful they get one run per person in their team. If the fielders get the batsmen run out then the batting team lose 5 runs. If the batsmen completes the run but all the other batters are not at the other set of cones before the ball is returned to the coach or wicketkeeper then no run is scored.
Dependent on the group I may only allow run outs or catches and players will bat for all of their balls even if they are bowled (or could lose 5 runs of their team total). Great for keeping everyone interested in the game, parents love to watch the chaos of all the batsmen running and fantastic for teaching maths as well !!
