Basicly there are only 2 attacking formations :

3:3 - two wing players + pivot form the first 3 and left,center and right backcourt players form the second line of 3.
In this way you position your players nicely devided over the pitch : deep and wide equally positioned.
Important is that always both wing and left and right backcourt positions must be occupied by your players. Otherwise you are too easy to defend.
2:4 - left and right backcourt players + two wings and two pivots is another formation

Then there are a lot od actions to go from 3:3 to 2:4 attacking formations. These actions are meant to get some disorder in the defense of your opponent. Wings starting to pivot positions, Left or right back court players starting to pivot positions are more or less well known actions.

So, to answer your question :
Have a look at your team : have you got only 2 good shooters you can start 3:3 and make your center backcourt player go to be an extra pivot every time and play on in 2:4 formation.
Like in football the formations tend to change quickly as players start moving around.
