The Question:How can I optimally increase my gameunderstandig.Introduction: I am a 15y (M), and I've been playing for about a year. I've already been taken out for the lowest form of "collection events of promising talents", if you could call it that. The Problem:My problem is the lack of experience in this sport, and therefore make errors when I try to be a playmaker. I feel like I'm setting my fellow teamates up for failures, and I feel like like I have to improve myself at a much faster pace then now.
Ok, game understanding is a big aspect of becoming a better player, so what I would recommend you do is that you would get 5 cones and put them at the place where they would be attacking, and the place where there would not be cone would be where you stand. So what you would do now is that you would imagine as if you are in a game, so like do feints and dribbles and try to pass, and after you pass or dribble try to pass to different positions, like wings backs, pivots, and just overall try to have some vision and see what is happening.
This is something you cannot do as an individual. You should ask your coach to come up with drills that have moments of decision in it. Start with simple ones like: a defender in front of you: shoot when he does not come forward to defend you (and then which techique do you use: center shot, shoot when running, low shot, jump shot?and then where to shoot into the goal: high, low, with bounce ball?): You see: three `simple` decisions to make here in this apparently simple drill.
In a second drill you can also choose to get past your defender when he comes forward to defend you. Then decisions are even more complex: left or right past him? (depends on positions of defenders next to him) - which technique to get past him - to use which shooting technique? - to choose where to thow the ball into the goal.
Kids should already be trained with these simple decision drills. So ask for decision drills! Not one , but all training sessiosn long!
