Pass and Follow

This exercise is designed to encourage players to follow their pass. Passing in a clockwise direction players pass and then follow the ball to the next cone.

warming-up : Cross-over pass and follow

Players stand in groups behind different cones. Players must pass the ball to the player opposite them and then follow their pass behind the player on the opposite side. Players can use a variation of passes: Center shot, jump shot (3,2,1 step rhythm), push pass, bounce pass, double handed pass, rolled pass, pass using your weaker hand etc.

Simple pass and follow drill. Starting with two players on the first cone and then one player on every other cone. The first player throws the ball to player two and then immediately sprints to follow their pass. Player 2 catches the ball and then turns and throws the player 3 before then also following their pass. This pattern continues until the player on the final cone receives the ball. At this point they dribble back to the start cone and the drills starts again.

The first player waiting in line passes to the first player on the cone and immediately follows their pass and runs behind that player to receive the return pass. Once they have the ball in hand again they pass the ball to the next player and drive behind them to loop in front of them and receive the ball again. Once the player reaches the end of the course they dribble the ball to the corner and then sprint around the court back to the end of the line with the ball in hand.

Players take it in turns to run with the ball and play three consecutive one-twos (passing and receiving the return pass). This should be performed without dribbling, with players using their 3 steps to receive the ball and in turn pass to the next player. When they reach the other side of the court (after the third pass) players dribble around the cones and back to the start line.

When the ball is passed to them players should advance to meet the pass and then return it to the feeder.

Warming Up Against High Balls ...

All players stand in one or more backcourt positions. They start running and in the meanwhile, they swing their arm that is carrying the ball. Once at the front of the queue, players shoot at goal, and it must be stoppable for the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper first touches the goalpast which is on the far most side, before coming back to the right position and stopping the ball. These movements should be repeated before every shot.

Players stand approximately 10 metres apart from one another in a 3:3 attacking formation and pass the ball between themselves using a variety of passes. The aim is to move the ball around quickly and accurately catching using one and two hands to receive the ball.

Player set up a line on both sides of the court, with one player standing in the middle. The first player starts with the ball and throws it to the central player and runs towards them. When they are within an arm's reach of the player they should land in front of them with wide feet and take the ball from their outstretched arm. As the player takes the ball they side step in the direction of where the ball is being held, step inside and then out again before zipping past the middle player and passing to the waiting player.

Based on the defender's movement player 4 should decide whether to pass to player 6, player 5 or not pass at all and take the shot on themselves. Blue player 1 starts with the ball and moves to make their defender follow them out of position, once they've dragged them outside they pass to player 2 who does the same and then passes to player 3 who passes to player 4. At this stage the game becomes 'live'. Blue 6 is stood between the two defenders and blue 5 is ready to make a run down the outside. Depending on the decisions made by the defence player 4 can pass early to player 6, throw the ball into the path of player 5 or simply go it alone and take the shot on themselves.
