This practice links to our teamâs game model of breaking down compact low defensive blocks by moving the opposition and creating space to attack quickly. The objective is to create scoring opportunities by playing over, through or around the opposition depending on the defensive structure. Key coaching factors include quick ball circulation with minimal touches to increase tempo, using width to stretch the defensive line and creating 1v1 situations for our wingers against opposition full-backs. Players are encouraged to recognise when to combine centrally to play through the block, switch play to attack around the block, or play over the defensive line with forward runs. If the opposition remain compact centrally, the principle of play can be adjusted by creating wide overloads or switching play quickly to isolate the full-back. The practice can be adapted to 5v5 with tight spaces to encourage quick combinations, and 7v7 with wider channels to create isolation opportunities for wingers and crossing situation
Attacking team must move the ball quickly with minimal touches to increase tempo and prevent the defence from staying compact. Use the full width of the pitch to stretch the defensive block and create spaces to play through, around or over the opposition. Look to switch play quickly to the opposite side to isolate the opposition full-back 1v1 against our winger. Wide players must attack defenders directly and positively when isolated in 1v1 situations. Encourage quick combinations and third-man runs to break through compact central areas. Players must make forward runs beyond the defensive line to create space and finishing opportunities. Support the player on the ball with good angles and distances to maintain attacking momentum. In the final third, players must show composure and quality in finishing, attacking crosses and rebounds aggressively. Progressions Limit touches to encourage attacking team to move the ball quicker
