Batting against spin is hard and without an effective game plan spinners can tie down batters, reducing the run rate and taking wickets. This masterclass video shows you how Ian Bell sets up against spin to prevent this from happening.

Ian Bell - Back Foot Defense:

Similar to the forward defense, this shot is played when the batter feels a good ball has been bowled and no runs can be scored from it.

A good defense is needed for batters to bat for long periods and to score runs.

Techniques

Corridor Bowling:

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON*

Using a wall, set up a line of cones about a foot from the wall to create a narrow corridor
Bowl along the wall (not releasing the ball)
Bowl in both directions as one direction encourages front arm to align straight and other direction encourages bowling arm to align straight.

Fast and spin bowling

Back Foot Defence:

To play this defensive shot properly players will need to think about their whole body's position in order to avoid popping the ball up for an easy take.

Batting Mechanics

Attacking front foot drives:

Player 2 throws. Each batsman has 3 consecutive balls, then goes to the back of the queue. If you leave a ball you get another go. The ball should be a slow high underarm feed.
