What is the session about?
This session works on dealing with the cutback. In most of the scenarios we are working with the ball cut back along the ground and we are trying to replicate the ball being played into a crowded six yard box. We start by just working on the basic movement into position to deal with a ball dragged back from the byline. The drills can be done in a small area if space is restricted.
How will this benefit a coach and their players?
The drills in this session can be adapted to any level or age. I did this session earlier in the week with my younger goalkeepers and they all loved it and were able to follow the rotations absolutely fine. Replace some of the service with outfield players and you have got some great drills to incorporate your goalkeepers into sessions.
What key skills will be worked on in this session?
The drills in these sessions work on movement patterns and falling into position after the ball is played out wide, to enable the goalkeeper to intercept the cut back. It also is important that the goalkeeper gets into line with the ball if the ball is played out of reach.
Is there a specific age group for this session to be aimed at? If so, what age group and why?
This session can be run for younger goalkeepers and they really enjoy the competitive drill at the end of the session. The drills in this session can be adapted to any level or age. I did this session earlier in the week with my younger goalkeepers and they all loved it and were able to follow the rotations absolutely fine.
More elite goalkeepers will benefit and enjoy the fitness aspect of the session especially if the number of repetitions are increased. Can you name an exercise which is particularly key to this session?
The tip tap cutback drill is a really good opportunity to see where the goalkeeper gets set after the ball is played out wide. It also is where the coach can see if the goalkeeper is using the most efficient route to get into position eg. Covering the least amount of ground. However if you want to introduce the competitive and fun element be sure to include the last drill.
