hi how to train a u10 boy to take reflex catches
Start by using a tennis ball. It is harder to catch than a cricket ball because your hands need to give more or the ball will bounce out of your hands. By beginning with a tennis ball he will learn the correct technique of catching and end up with "soft hands" when he begins catching a cricket ball.
At 10 years old the ball is hard and can hurt the hands when you learn to catch. For some kids that`s a turn off and they can become afraid of the hard ball and will find learning to catch an unpleasant and painful task and they won`t want to do it.
Stand opposite the boy a couple of metres apart and simply throw underhand to him. Try throwing to slightly different areas, high, low, to the side, in the middle, faster, softer etc as he gets better.
Stand 10 metres apart and throw quicker and harder until he catches every thing.
When he is confident and a good catch of the tennis ball, move to a cricket ball. Go gradually and make it enjoyable, ask him what he would like to practice, you want him to have some fun so he is encouraged to continue practicing.
