Example of advancing down wicket

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required. 6 tennis balls per pair/group.Feeder stands 4 meters away from batter, feeding ball as a drop feed, with arm out horizontally, and standing on the batters off side for safety. (adjust height of arm depending on height of feeder, and speed of batter to ball)Batter must use their feet and move down the wicket, meeting the ball on the second bounce, before hitting the ball through the cones. PROGRESSIONMake target smallerAllow player to hit over the top (aerially) – still keeping shape of shot and not leaning back or hitting to hard/to the leg side.Alter distance batter has to advance to get to the ball.

Looking to defend ball after using feet coming down the wicket Quick feet from the batter are essential when getting to the ball. When advancing down the wicket, batter must aim to keep head as still as possible, and eyes level. Batter needs to be in a still position by the time they make contact, and well balanced. Encourage player to loosen bottom hand upon impact, and maintain their weight into the shot by leaning forward not back. Bat coming through straight s key, with soft hands, with player looking to drop the ball at their feet, making impact underneath their eyes.

Use of feet - Off Drive

Looking to hit ball towards mid off Quick feet from the batter are essential when getting to the ball. When advancing down the wicket, batter must aim to keep head as still as possible, and eyes level. Batter needs to be in a still position by the time they make contact, and well balanced. Encourage player to loosen bottom hand upon impact, and maintain their weight into the shot by leaning forward not back. Bat following through straight s key, with a ‘checked’ follow through not full. This will help direct the ball to mid off.

When advancing down the wicket, batter must aim to keep head as still as possible, and eyes level. Batter needs to be in a still position by the time they make contact, and well balanced.

Coming down the wicket is an attacking option which puts pressure on the (usually spin) bowler and can force them to change their length. <br>It takes confidence to come down the wicket but from this drill you'll be able to teach your players how to do it effectively.

In pairs, one player with a football feeding and one with a bat in their stance. Feeder to throw the ball out slightly in front of the batter and high enough for them to header it. Batter to return the ball with a header, with the head leading the player should be automatically stepping into the header.

Already down on one knee in sweep position, batter looks to play orthodox sweep shot (shot number 1), aiming for the line indicated on diagram.

Coach or partner feeds the ball.They will feed the batsman a total of 4 balls and alternate between a low full toss and a waist height full toss.The batsman will drive the low full toss and pull the waist height feed.After every shot, the batsman should advance down the wicket towards the feeder, ready for the next delivery.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required, with 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Each batter should be wearing a minimum of helmet and gloves on. This drill is designed to improve player's confidence against the short ball. Feeds should range from heights 1,2 and 3, and each batter should have 10 feeds before swapping over. Feeds are from a close range, under arm feed, without bouncing, from a kneeling position. The batter should be encouraged to learn to defend and/or evade at first, gaining confidence and getting them in a better position than before to attack after.

Mark out a boxing ring/ square with cones. Coach or someone trained in using pads to have a set of pads. Player to have a set of boxing gloves. Moving around the marked out ring/square with legs in your batting stance. Pads are to be shown and player with the gloves is to react and punch the pad. Opposite hand to pad shown. Coach to throw in some swings with the pads so that the players have to react and duck.

Cricket: Ground fielding drill

Two teams pass the ball to their team mates with an overarm throw which must bounce only once and then must be caught. Using the throws to advance towards the opposition's grid players must not step inside the grid. When they get close enough they can throw at the stumps. If they miss a team mate can run around the back of the stumps to catch the ball. If caught that team can have another shot, if the opposition catch the ball they then move back up the field to the opposition's grid.
