Backlift and Drive

Batter to set up in stance, and receive bobble feed. Hit the ball driving onto front foot. Hold shape of follow through for 3 seconds.

(see c50024 & c50024a for more info)Coaching points (in order of importance)For younger players, introduce one point at a time.1. High backlift over off stump with dominant top hand. (Bottom hand fingers and thumb grip.)2. Step back and across the crease, getting head and body into line with the ball (eyes level).3. Weight on back foot, whcih lands parallel to crease (head left forward of the body).4. With dominant top hand and diamond shape formed with arms, Push bat towards the ball. (Forearms passing close to body.)5. Strike ball forward of body, directly below eye level.6. Keep leading elbow high, close to head.7. Bottom hand fingers and thumb grip.8. Top hand dominates throughout the shot.9. Look through the handle of the bat on completion of the shot. (Head directly above hands, and in line with back foot.)Play the ball with soft hands, so it rolls back up the wicket.Aims of the practice To protect the wickets and leave the wide balls; also to defend the ball straight back up the wicket (between the two parallel lines shown in the diagram). This is the furthest point away from the fielders. If you feel you are going to play the ball outside this line on the off side, leave it alone as it is too wide to play at.

Set up the practice as shown in the diagram. Make sure that the bowler feeds the ball in over arm and gets the ball to bounce to waist height. The Batsman then plays a back foot drive and tries to aim to hit the ball through the cones.

Sweep Technique

Step 1: Batsman starts down on 1 knee in the sweep position with a full backlift. Coach feeds an under arm single bounce throw. Batsman excutes the sweep shot. Step 2: Batsman starts in a half lunge position with the front foot stepping down the pitch. Coach feeds the same delivery. Batsman completes the lunge and executes the sweep shot. Step 3: Batsman starts in their normal stance. Coach feeds the same delivery. Batsman completes the full sweep shot.

Boxing for Batters Front foot ...

Mark out a boxing ring/ square with cones. Coach or someone trained in using pads to have a set of pads. Player to have a set of boxing gloves. Moving around the marked out ring/square with legs in your batting stance. Pads are to be shown and player with the gloves is to react and punch the pad. Opposite hand to pad shown. Coach to throw in some swings with the pads so that the players have to react and duck.

Set up 3 different coloured cones midway down the wicket going across. From a bobble feed. Hit the ball and hold the shape whilst taking steps in the line of the shot till the cones are met. Players to have 2 shots each before rotating. Once players have a feel for it, move on to the progression- calling the colour of the cone.

Set the bowling machine to delivering from around the wicket, swinging into the batsman.Allow each player to hit 3 balls and rotate. Batter to hit one shot from set position followed by one shot from stance (slighlty open). Set position with kness and laces down the wicket and holiding the shape. From stance, stepping into the shot and finding that same position down the wicket and holding the shape.

Played to a ball short of a length and wide of off stump. Ball is aimed square of the wicket. Relaxed, balanced stance, head still, eyes level. Back swing and step back towards off side. Base established, weight stays slightly forward. Shoulders rotate towards offside, horizontally. Bat accelerates, hitting from high to low. Ball contact is made level with head, allow for natural follow through.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. Feeder drops ball in front of batter (with arm out horizontally, standing on the off side of the batsman for safety purposes). Batter steps towards the ball, and aims to drive the ball on the second bounce/ half volley, driving the ball on the ground through the target zones. Each group needs 6 tennis balls and each batter gets 6 feeds. Drill is best done in nets (2 grounds per net in opposite directions). Encourage players to wear at least batting gloves when doing this practice.

(see c50016a &amp; c50016b for more info)<br />Set up for the practice<br />Think enjoyment minimises boredom and encourages repetition (repetition -&gt; development)<br /><br />1. Set up practice as shown in diagram.<br />2. Markers on the floor for fielders to stand on, should be 3 metres from the batsman. Be strict on this point - safety.<br />3. Mark out the target area for feeder to aim at for the back foot defence.<br />4. Ideal number for each group is 4-5 players -maximun activity<br />5. Feeder kneels 7-10 paces from the batsman.<br />6. Feeder says \&quot;Bat Up!\&quot;, then feeds a dart feed, standing up, throwing from head height downwards. The ball should be aimned to bounce once and between the batsman's waist and chest height.<br />7. Each group has 3 balls.<br />8. Ideal duration of practice: 20-30 mins.

This is an attacking stroke, played to a full, wide of off stump delivery. Keep a relaxed, balanced stance, with your head and eyes level. Using your normal backswing, step forward; your leading foot should have a comfortable stride to the pitch of the ball. When playing the stroke the front shoulder dips, front knee bends. Your shoulders rotate vertically, bat moves in an arc (3 o'clock to 9 o'clock) and continues  through the line of the ball in the direction of shot (through the covers - on the on-side).

Batsman stands with an exaggerated open stance.On contact with the ball the batsman is to get into position for the drive and step into where the shot should go. Alternate between the exaggerated, open stance and the batsmans normal stance.
