Cover drive

This is an attacking stroke, played to a full, wide of off stump delivery. Keep a relaxed, balanced stance, with your head and eyes level. Using your normal backswing, step forward; your leading foot should have a comfortable stride to the pitch of the ball. When playing the stroke the front shoulder dips, front knee bends. Your shoulders rotate vertically, bat moves in an arc (3 o'clock to 9 o'clock) and continues  through the line of the ball in the direction of shot (through the covers - on the on-side).

Drill designed to increase power of top hand, and reduce use of bottom hand in strokes. Attacking stroke, played to a full delivery, using a ‘bobble feed’ Relaxed balanced stance, head and eyes level Backswing and step forward Front shoulder dips Base established, front knee bends Comfortable stride, with foot next to ball (on the outside of foot) Shoulders rotate vertically, bat accelerates on contact Bat swings through line of ball and follows through the direction of shot KEY- don’t lean back and try and hit ball too hard- follow all of the above as of the standard straight drive technique.

Pull Stroke.

1. As the backswing begins, the head, shoulders and back foot move back and across. 2. The front leg is moved back and towards the leg side, forming the base for the shot with the head slightly forward. Keep the hands high and judge by the bounce and line of the ball whether or not to attempt the shot. 3. If you take on the shot then the arms should swing through and be fully extended as contact is made with the ball.4. The follow through will either see both feet move round and point towards the path of the shot (as illustrated), or see the front leg raised off the ground, with your weight pivoting on the back foot.

Played to a length ball pitching on or around line of the stumps Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required. 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Feeder looks to feed the ball around middle stump, using an underarm 'bobble' feed. Already down on one knee in sweep position, batter looks to play orthodox sweep shot (shot number 1), aiming for the line indicated on diagram.

Played to a ball short of a length and wide of off stump. Ball is aimed square of the wicket. Relaxed, balanced stance, head still, eyes level. Back swing and step back towards off side. Base established, weight stays slightly forward. Shoulders rotate towards offside, horizontally. Bat accelerates, hitting from high to low. Ball contact is made level with head, allow for natural follow through.

Played to a ball that at the body, usually head high Batter flexes knees, and aims to duck underneath path of ball. Maintaining balance is essential. Batter must look to go back and across stumps Maintain side on position, achieved by encouraging player to keep shoulders parallel. This keeps batter a smaller target Keep weight forward even when moving back and across, to maintain balance and control of the shot Batter must keep eye on ball all the way.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. Feeder drops ball in front of batter (with arm out horizontally, standing on the off side of the batsman for safety purposes). Batter steps towards the ball, and aims to drive the ball on the second bounce/ half volley, driving the ball on the ground through the target zones. Each group needs 6 tennis balls and each batter gets 6 feeds. Drill is best done in nets (2 grounds per net in opposite directions). Encourage players to wear at least batting gloves when doing this practice.

Move both feet back towards the stumps, opening your body out towards the ball, but make sure that you keep your leg stump covered. <br><br>Keep your head forward and in line with the ball. <br><br>2. Bring the bat through on as straight a path as possible, turning the bat face slightly towards the leg side and making contact with the ball in front of the front pad.<br><br>3. Control the shot with the top hand, glancing the ball away.

As they prepare to strike the ball the front shoulder dips and the front knee bends. Shoulders rotate vertically and the bat decelerates on contact. The back heel should be raised to help get above the ball and players' bottom hand should be relaxed to avoid over hitting the ball.

Set the bowling machine to bowl between middle and leg.Set two cones up a third of the way down the wicket. One central and one leg side. Batsman to hit from the front on drive set position, knees and feet facing down the wicket.Batsman to hit an on drive, hold the follow through and move towards the cones holding the shape. Have the batsman face 3 balls each, making adjustment, and rotate through several times.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required. 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Each batter will have two rounds of 6 balls each.Feeder must feed over arm, bouncing the ball in the feeding zone, at height of feed number (1) as seen in the short ball drill.Batter plays pull shot, looking to hit ball along the ground. Nets would be essential for this practice. PROGRESSION Feeder can come closer, and feed on the full, under arm at batter for improved accuracy. This feed would also allow for rapid fire feeding, where only the hands move in the execution of the shot.Cricket balls may be used for this.
