Back foot defence

3-5 people stand in each net, with one bowler and the others waiting to receive the ball. Each bowler bowls 24 balls with the batsman getting 3 consecutive balls. If the batsman decides to leaves one of the balls then they may have another ball. On receiving 3 balls the batsman must join the back of the queue.

To play this defensive shot properly players will need to think about their whole body's position in order to avoid popping the ball up for an easy take.

Back foot defence: Playing in the V

Set up in groups as shown: one batsman, one wicket keeper, one feeder and one or two fielders. Mark out the V area with chalk or cones, approximately 4-5 metres wide. The batsmen has to try and hit the ball between the cones to score runs, if they do they get one run, if not, they lose two runs.

Forward Defence

Each batter gets 6 balls each and then rotates. The thrower delivers the ball on one knee making the ball bounce once to the knee height of the batter. If the ball is wide or the ball is left then another ball is bowled. The aim is for the batsmen to defend the ball and aim to hit the ball through the cones. For safety reasons no attacking shots are permitted.

The quick singles game

This game can be played in teams (6-10 a-side) or in pairs (8-10 players). Rules of the game: There should be a batter at both ends. If playing in pairs, give each pair two or three wickets. If playing in teams, when a wicket falls it is the turn of the next batsman. Tip and run, or two or three balls to make a run. The coach throws either all front foot defence or all back foot defence bowls. The fielders must stay on the cones or with one hand on the wall until the ball is thrown, otherwise batsmen automatically get a two run bonus. Ways of getting out: Bowled, caught, run out, stumped, playing an attacking shot, or failing to score off the limited number of deliveries. The batsman can only score singles but the boundaries count for overthrows. Overthrows: side walls = 2 runs, back wall behind wicket keeper = 1 run, front wall = 4 runs (Unless you hit a 4 you can run singles to add to the side and back wall scores.) If a batsman leaves the ball it does not count and he does not have to run. If the batsman plays and misses it counts as a delivery

Make the last round competitive: try to survive all 8-10 balls without getting out.If you are out, change round. On the practice round, players get another ball if one goes wide. On the competitive round, have 8-10 balls whether players leave the ball or play and miss.If a player deliberately plays an attacking shot he loses that round of 8-10 balls. (Be strict on this point).

(see c50024 &amp; c50024a for more info)<br />Coaching points (in order of importance)<br /><br />For younger players, introduce one point at a time.<br />1. High backlift over off stump with dominant top hand. (Bottom hand fingers and thumb grip.)<br />2. Step back and across the crease, getting head and body into line with the ball (eyes level).<br />3. Weight on back foot, whcih lands parallel to crease (head left forward of the body).<br />4. With dominant top hand and diamond shape formed with arms, Push bat towards the ball. (Forearms passing close to body.)<br />5. Strike ball forward of body, directly below eye level.<br />6. Keep leading elbow high, close to head.<br />7. Bottom hand fingers and thumb grip.<br />8. Top hand dominates throughout the shot.<br />9. Look through the handle of the bat on completion of the shot. (Head directly above hands, and in line with back foot.)<br /><br />Play the ball with soft hands, so it rolls back up the wicket.<br /><br /><br />Aims of the practice<br /> To protect the wickets and leave the wide balls; also to defend the ball straight back up the wicket (between the two parallel lines shown in the diagram). This is the furthest point away from the fielders. If you feel you are going to play the ball outside this line on the off side, leave it alone as it is too wide to play at.

<br />Organisation: Organise the group as shown. Batsman plays the ball defensively only when it is going to hit the stumps.<br />1 point is given for every successful call of leave.<br />5 points are deducted if ball hits the stumps.<br />2 points are deducted if batsman plays the ball so softly that it does not roll beyond the line drawn 4 metres from the wicket.<br />Groups rotate after 5 attempts each. Winner is the one with the most points.<br />Safety: No attacking shots. Aim to defend the ball back between the cones and if you leave the ball you can have another ball.<br />N.B. An overarm throw will be necessary for this practice.<br /><br />Equipment: 1 bat and 1 tennis ball per group. 1 set of stumps. Chalk markings / Cones

If the ball goes into the air the batter is out. If you defend and hit the ball back through the cones you can call \&quot;YES\&quot; and run. If the ball doesnt go through the cones then you stay in batting unitl out of goes. (Target of 30 runs per group)

Played to a ball short of a length, roughly stump high. Batsman should have a relaxed and balanced stance - head still, eyes level. Back swing and step back. Their front shoulder should then dip. With the base established, weight stays slightly forward. Shoulders rotate vertically, front leg drawn back, alongside the back foot. Bat decelerates, &lsquo;soft hands&rsquo; upon impact. Ball contact under eyes.

Layout for the game<br />1. Play as teams (5-8 a-side) or individuals (6-10 players).<br />2. With chalk or disks, mark out the fielding positions available.<br />3. Make sure the marks are 4 paces away from the batsman.<br />4. Short leg must be slightly deeper: 5 paces.<br />5. Slip or gully in normal position for cricket.<br />6. Coach must feed when possible (to save arguments).<br />7. Feed ball on one knee, 7 or 8 paces away.<br />8. Encourage fielders to shout \&quot;Howzat\&quot; when a catch is taken.<br />9. Set up the game and do a quick demonstration.<br />10. Give a batting order.<br />11. When using more than one team, make it a mini tournament. Winners play winners, losers play losers.

If the ball is pitched on the stumps - but short of a good length - it needs to be played safely. Going forward to a delivery like this is dangerous and you will also increase the chance of getting out. Going back on your crease and meeting the ball at the top of its bounce will help you to be in full control of the shot. Also, try to meet the ball with soft hands. This means relaxing your hands on the bat handle, which helps to take the pace off the ball and reduces the chances of getting caught near the wicket.

The defensive stroke should be played to a ball of good line and length. Players stand in a relaxed and balanced stance, head and eyes level. Back swing and step forward to meet the ball. As they prepare to strike the ball the front shoulder dips and the front knee bends. Shoulders rotate vertically and the bat decelerates on contact. The back heel should be raised to help get above the ball and players' bottom hand should be relaxed to avoid over hitting the ball.
