Back foot defence

Organisation: Organise the group as shown. Batsman plays the ball defensively only when it is going to hit the stumps.1 point is given for every successful call of leave.5 points are deducted if ball hits the stumps.2 points are deducted if batsman plays the ball so softly that it does not roll beyond the line drawn 4 metres from the wicket.Groups rotate after 5 attempts each. Winner is the one with the most points.Safety: No attacking shots. Aim to defend the ball back between the cones and if you leave the ball you can have another ball.N.B. An overarm throw will be necessary for this practice.Equipment: 1 bat and 1 tennis ball per group. 1 set of stumps. Chalk markings / Cones

The wicket keeper rolls the ball out for the players from each side to run onto and pick up. The fielding players run from each side in turns and try to hit the stumps with a fast throw. The keeper then collects the ball and rolls it out again for a player from the other side to run onto.

Ground fielding and throwing

Players take it in turns to throw the ball at stumps around in a square. If they hit the stumps the direction is reversed and the ball is thrown the other way. the ball should be thrown over arm and tried to keep in the square shape. A long barrier can be used to stop the ball go to far.

Throw ball round the square trying to hit the stumps. When the stumps are hit reverse the direction.See how many hits can be got in 10 mins or race another team. When you hit, all move round until you complete the square.

Spin Bowling Relay

With teams of 4-8 people the players take it in turn to bowl the ball at the wickets and after 4 feeds the wicket keeper is swapped by someone bowling and the bowling continues. The first team to hit the stumps a certain amount of times wins or points are awarded every time the stumps are hit.

Target Bowling - In team

Split the group into teams. Setup sets of stumps 20 yrds (22 yrds - Depending on age) apart. Have one player in each team as a wicket keeper. The object of the game is to hit the stumps, if you do your team gets one point. The first team to ten hits is the winner.

Two Handed Interception and Throw.

4 to 8 players per group. Player 1 rolls the ball out, while player two meets the ball and throws it to the passer who is now stood behind the stumps. Player 2 now runs to player 1's original starting place and repeats the drill with the next player in the line.

Warm up drills

Roll the ball along the ground to a team mate. You can run with the ball, but the ball must be rolled along the ground.Aim to hit the stumps (approach from any side of the square)in the opposition square, using an underarm flick. The square is made up of cones, distance 5-8 metres from the stumps.No fielders at any time are allowed inside the square. The ball is never out of bounds, as there are no boundaries.

Set up as shown: two sets of stumps with a wicket keeper with a ball behind each. Two lines of players. The WK facing the two lines starts by throwing the ball out for player 1 to run out and catch Player 1 catches the ball and throws the ball over the stumps for the WK to catch. The second WK (player 4) now rolls the ball out for the fielder to run onto, gather and then throw at the stumps. Player 4 collects the ball and leaves it behind the stumps for the fielder. Players then rotate, with players 4 joining the back of the opposite line and player 1 taking up the role of second WK. Drill should be continuous.

Set up 4 stations with equal numbers at each. The idea of the drill is that players work with diagonal 'opposite' teamates.Players 1 retireves the ball first and player 3 runs out to the stumps to back up the throw.Let's play:Coach rolls the ball straight out.<br /><br />A player from team 1 attacks the ball and throw it over the top of the stumps in the middle to a team 3 player who has run out to back up the throw.<br /><br />The backing up player must then turn, and throw at the single stump with a direct hit.<br /><br />Both players then join the back of their original groups and the other two teams can now go.After 6 repetitions the two groups will swap ends.

<br />Teams of 3-6 people for as many groups as you like. Player (3) runs up to the ball and does an under arm flick to (1) who puts tha ball back in the middle and then goes to the back of the other queue. The first team who gets back to the same position they started wins.

Divide the main group into smaller groups of 5 and organise as shown in the diagram. When the batter calls &quot;Ready&quot; the bowler bowls overarm at a target in line with the stump, 3 metres in front of the batter, with one player acting as a wicket keeper in case the batter fails to make contact. The batter should then hit the ball into the wall and try to make 2 runs  without being caught or run out.

5 Stump Pentagon Drill Ground ...

10-18 players required. (Note diagram for accurate lay-out of drill.) Five stumps required for drill. Three stumps are set up on a diagonal line, 10m apart from each other. The other two stumps are 20m away from these, again on a diagonal but this time they are 20m apart.The Coach stands at the top on the middle stump.The drill begins when coach rolls the ball out as shown. Player 1 must sprint around the first stump, change direction and then underarm pick the ball up, aiming to hit the third stump.Player 2 must anticipate the ball coming towards them, and moves forward off the cone to back the ball up. Player 2 then throws overarm at the base of the next stump.Player 3 anticipates this happening, and backs the throw up, before throwing the ball over the top of the final stump.The next player now returns the ball to the coach, and then continues to run around the first stump.Drill continues, and players follow the ball, moving clockwise to the next station.

Set up two cones, 10m apart and 10m from the target stump.(This drill is best performed in front of a net as shown).Coach rolls the balls out one after another down the middle of the two cones.As the balls come out players must attack them one at a time, running diagonally from alternate cones, to pick up the ball and throw them back looking to hit the stump.Players then join the back of opposite queue.

See how many consecutive catches the Wicket Keeper can take before he has to move or the ball bounces. If this happens put score back to 0.<BR>This can be done against another group, i.e. first to 15 catches without keeper moving.

The wicket keeper rolls the ball out around the side of the stumps. Fielders run from the left first, then right (then left...) to receive the ball and throw it back over the top of the stumps. Competition: An opposition wicket keeper rolls 5 balls out to try and score goals past the opposition's line of fielders. The winners are the ones who stop the most balls.

The wicket keeper feeds the ball straight out, along the ground, to the fielders who take it in turns to retrieve the ball. Player's who run from the wicket-keeper's left should throw the ball back to the keeper with their left-hand and those from the right throw with their right-hand.

The feeder throws the ball from a minimum of 10 metres in front of the batter, allowing the ball to bounce several times before it reaches them, before moving out of the way. The batter strikes the ball between the cones against the wall and the other players attempt to field the rebound.

Wicketkeeper starts with the ball and rolls out the the fielder in the square leg position.Square leg fielder picks up the ball and aims a throw at the ramp.Fielder at point gets in line with the throw and catches/collects the ball from the throw and then releases a throw at the non-strikers end single stump.Mid-on fielder backs up this throw and gives an underarm throw to the extra cover fielder who has moved im behind the non-strikers end stump.Extra cover completes the drill by throwing the ball back into the wicketkeeper.

Throw a length ball slowly on leg stump which bounces around knee height.<br /><br />In a small sports hall<br />Hit into a wall and fielders will get the rebound or catch. Important - no fielders within the target area. Batsman stands at least 8 metres from the wall.<br /><br />Outside or in a large sports hall<br />Fielders stand within the target area. At least 15 metres from the batsman.

<BR>Setup the practice as shown.Coach throws on one knee.All fielders except the wicket keeper and the player backing up must stand on the boundary between the cones until the ball is bowled. (Coach keeps hold of the ball when feeding every so often, to check whether fielders are moving too early).<BR>The Ball must be driven towards the target area, along the ground, and not defended. It must pass the first set of cones or the batsman is out. The batsman must complete 2 runs after striking the ball. The ball must be hit in the V to score runs. If it is hit outside that area or behind the wicket the batsman is out. (Give younger players another feed.)The wicket keeper must take incoming throws to the stumps either side of the original ones. Off side shots must be thrown to stumps on the off side (safety) and likewise on the leg side. Scoring: (Batsman bat one at a time):<br>4 runs if the ball is hit through the target area along the ground.<BR>2 runs if the ball is hit towards the boundary and the batsman completes 2 runs.<BR><b>Penalty runs</b><BR> 2 runs if a fielder stops the ball with his foot.<BR>1 run if a fielder move off the boundary too early.<BR>4 runs if the player backing up the wicket keeper misses the ball (when boundary is not hit).Ways of getting out: Bowled, caught, stumped, run out (no LBW). Also: not completing 2 runs after hitting the ball (unless boundary is hit); hitting the ball outside the V; not hitting the ball past the first set of cones; hitting the ball over the fielders on the boundary.
