Moving Out to Drive Front foot...

Exercise for groups of 3-6 players. 1 person throws 6 balls to the batsman who has to try and hit all the balls between the target area (doesn't necessarily need to be played against a wall). After the 6 balls the batsmen becomes the thrower and the thrower goes to back of queue to field, whilst the next batsman steps in.

1. Move both feet back towards the stumps, opening your body out towards the ball, but make sure that you keep your leg stump covered. <br><br>Keep your head forward and in line with the ball. <br><br>2. Bring the bat through on as straight a path as possible, turning the bat face slightly towards the leg side and making contact with the ball in front of the front pad.<br><br>3. Control the shot with the top hand, glancing the ball away.

1. As the backswing begins, the head, shoulders and back foot move back and across. <br><br> 2. The front leg is moved back and towards the leg side, forming the base for the shot with the head slightly forward. <br><Br>Keep the hands high and judge by the bounce and line of the ball whether or not to attempt the shot. <br><Br>3. If you take on the shot then the arms should swing through and be fully extended as contact is made with the ball.<br><br>4. The follow through will either see both feet move round and point towards the path of the shot (as illustrated), or see the front leg raised off the ground, with your weight pivoting on the back foot. <BR><BR>

Batsman to step in to the shot, once the front foot is planted, have the batsman strike the ball with the back foot in the air to prevent them from being able to back away from the ball.

Mark out a boxing ring/ square with cones. Coach or someone trained in using pads to have a set of pads. Player to have a set of boxing gloves. Moving around the marked out ring/square with legs in your batting stance. Pads are to be shown and player with the gloves is to react and punch the pad. Opposite hand to pad shown. Coach to throw in some swings with the pads so that the players have to react and duck.

In pairs, one player with a football feeding and one with a bat in their stance. Feeder to throw the ball out slightly in front of the batter and high enough for them to header it. Batter to return the ball with a header, with the head leading the player should be automatically stepping into the header.

Moving Out Competition Game Ru...

Two teams have 3 shots each (moving out to drive) which they must play as a drive shot. If they don't they will out. Fielders (3), (4) and (5) must collect the rebounds (or direct hits if there are no walls for you to use) and try to run out the batman. Players 1 and 2 are to back up incoming throws. If the ball hits the side wall 4 runs are awarded. If the ball is hit along the ground past the fielders 4 runs are awarded. If the ball is hit over head, six runs are awarded. Batsmen must complete 2 runs if they hit the ball and do not hit a boundary. Teams get a certain number of lives which are lost when out, they keep batting until all their lives are used.

Set the bowling machine to bowl between middle and leg.Set two cones up a third of the way down the wicket. One central and one leg side. Batsman to hit from the front on drive set position, knees and feet facing down the wicket.Batsman to hit an on drive, hold the follow through and move towards the cones holding the shape. Have the batsman face 3 balls each, making adjustment, and rotate through several times.

Divide the group into groups of 4 and organise as shown in the diagram. Player (1) drives the ball off the tee at the target. If the distance is more than 11 metres players (2) and (3) attempt to stop the ball and return it to player (4) who replaces the tee and ball. Players rotate roles after 5 attempts. If the distance is less than 11 metres players (2) and (3) remain behind the batter and collect rebound from the wall. Equipment: 1 bat, tennis ball and tee per group. 2 marker cones and chalked lines.

The player at the front of the 2 players runs to the cone with the ball picks up the ball and then places it on the other cone. They then continue to run to the other side to tag the waiting player. Once tagged the next player runs to the middle and moves the ball back to the first cone and run to the other side. The drill continues in this way.

Cricket: The back foot driving...

<BR>Setup the practice as shown.Coach throws on one knee.All fielders except the wicket keeper and the player backing up must stand on the boundary between the cones until the ball is bowled. (Coach keeps hold of the ball when feeding every so often, to check whether fielders are moving too early).<BR>The Ball must be driven towards the target area, along the ground, and not defended. It must pass the first set of cones or the batsman is out. The batsman must complete 2 runs after striking the ball. The ball must be hit in the V to score runs. If it is hit outside that area or behind the wicket the batsman is out. (Give younger players another feed.)The wicket keeper must take incoming throws to the stumps either side of the original ones. Off side shots must be thrown to stumps on the off side (safety) and likewise on the leg side. Scoring: (Batsman bat one at a time):<br>4 runs if the ball is hit through the target area along the ground.<BR>2 runs if the ball is hit towards the boundary and the batsman completes 2 runs.<BR><b>Penalty runs</b><BR> 2 runs if a fielder stops the ball with his foot.<BR>1 run if a fielder move off the boundary too early.<BR>4 runs if the player backing up the wicket keeper misses the ball (when boundary is not hit).Ways of getting out: Bowled, caught, stumped, run out (no LBW). Also: not completing 2 runs after hitting the ball (unless boundary is hit); hitting the ball outside the V; not hitting the ball past the first set of cones; hitting the ball over the fielders on the boundary.

Divide into pairs and set up the activity as shown in the diagram. From a measured distance behind the stumps, the wicket keeper runs up to the wicket and catches 5 consecutive throws from a measured distance thrown by player 1. After each take, the wicket keeper returns to the starting point. When taken, the ball is dropped into a container. 5 attempts and then change roles.

Looking to defend ball after using feet coming down the wicket Quick feet from the batter are essential when getting to the ball. When advancing down the wicket, batter must aim to keep head as still as possible, and eyes level. Batter needs to be in a still position by the time they make contact, and well balanced. Encourage player to loosen bottom hand upon impact, and maintain their weight into the shot by leaning forward not back. Bat coming through straight s key, with soft hands, with player looking to drop the ball at their feet, making impact underneath their eyes.

Player 1 rolls the ball out, 2 intercepts and flicks at stump 2. 8 stops the ball and rolls it out towards 3, 5 then intercepts. After each throw, players run up the side and join the back of the queue.<BR><b>Note: </b> The person who starts the practice with the first throw stays where they are until the next turn, then they throw and run up the side.

Players work in groups of 4-6 players.Two cones are spaced 10m apart. Player one stands between the two cones.Stumps are placed 10m away opposite both cones, in line with the cones.Players 2 and 3 both start behind the two stumps.Player one moves side-ways, from cone to cone, taking a catch on one cone and returning it, and performing an underarm pick-up on the other cone.Players take two balls on each side (total of 4) and then swaps over with one of the players behind the stump who in turn joins the rest of the group behind the far cone.Drill continues in this way...

Back Foot Defence Techniques -...

If the ball is pitched on the stumps - but short of a good length - it needs to be played safely. Going forward to a delivery like this is dangerous and you will also increase the chance of getting out. Going back on your crease and meeting the ball at the top of its bounce will help you to be in full control of the shot. Also, try to meet the ball with soft hands. This means relaxing your hands on the bat handle, which helps to take the pace off the ball and reduces the chances of getting caught near the wicket.

Setup as shown.<BR><b>As teams </b>(6 a-side)<br>(A) Each batsman has 6 balls. If he is out he scores -4. When all the batsman have batted they switch to fielding.<BR>(B) Each batsman has 4-6 balls. If he is out the next batsman comes in. If the batsman is not out he returns to the back of the queue of waiting batsman, until it is his turn again. The last batsman has unlimited balls. If a batsman hits a 4 another ball is added.<br><br><b>As individuals</b> (8-10 players)<br>(A) Each individual bats until he is out. When a batsman is given out, all the fielders move clockwise one round from their previous position.<br>(B) Each individual batsman has 6-8 balls. If he is out he scores -4. When a batsman is given out, all the fielders move clock-wise one round from their previous position.

Player 1 rolls the ball out to player 2 who shys at the stumps, meanwhile player 1 has moved behind the stumps (backing up), ready to collect the ball.<br /><br /> Player 2 then runs to player 1's original position.<br /><br /> Player 1 then throws the ball to players 2. Player 1 now joins back of other group on the opposite side. Group B do exactly the same.

Set up 3 different coloured cones midway down the wicket going across. From a bobble feed. Hit the ball and hold the shape whilst taking steps in the line of the shot till the cones are met. Players to have 2 shots each before rotating. Once players have a feel for it, move on to the progression- calling the colour of the cone.
