Group coaching for the back foot drives

Rules of the practice 1. All shots to be executed with two hands (top hand dominant).2. Each player has 8-10 balls, then all rotate clockwise.3. Give groups 2-3 coaching points to work on.4. Have about 3-4 rounds each (depending on time limit).5. Make the last round competitive; see who can hit all balls through target area along the ground. Fielders must stop the ball.6. If players leave the ball they get another ball. If they play and miss they do not.7. If players delibrately play cross-batted shots on leg side they lose that round. (Be strict on this point - safety).8. If a player hits the ball into the air, over the fielders, it does not count and they lose that ball.9. On the competitive round, if a player gets out, all change.Do not set up groups too close to one another - think safety! Coach positions himself where he can monitor all groups safely.

Front foot batting

Group coaching for the front foot defence

(see c50016 & c50016b for more info)Rules of the practice1. Each player has 8-10 feeds, then all rotate clockwise.2. Give groups 2-3 coaching points to work on.3. Have about 3-4 rounds each (depending on time limit).4. For the first round of 8-10 play every other shot with the top hand only (to show the importance of the top hand).5. Make the last round competitive: try to survive all 8-10 feeds without getting out. If you're out, change round.6. On the practice round, players get another feed if one goes wide. On the competitive round, have 8-10 feeds whether players leave the ball or play and miss.7. If a player deliberately plays an attacking shot he loses that round of 8-10 feeds. (Be strict on this point - safety.)Don't set up groups too close to one another - think safety! Coach positions himself where he can monitor all groups safely.

Inside/Outisde

2 teams of 4 players. Players 2 and 3 stand back to back and opposite their partner, players 1 and 4, about 5 metres apart, gradually increasing the distance to 10 metres. The rules are that you are not allowed to move with the ball. You must throw under arm to your partners waist. Commands from the coach. "Inside" - players on the inside (2 and 3) switch positions. "Outside" - players on the outside (1 and 4)run to their right and switch positions. "Partner switch" - switch positions with your partner, remember, you can't move with the ball. "Group switch" - player without the ball switches into another group of 4. "Ball switch" - the player with the ball makes eye contact with another group and then switches their ball. The aim is to enhance the players throwing and catching skills. To develop the drill vary the height of the throw i.e. to the knee or shoulder. Vary the speed of the delivery.

Batting Mechanics

One Day Singles Cricket

10-12 players are needed for singles cricket and players should pair up so that they can bat and bowl in pairs. Each pair has 1-2 wickets, once these have been used those players are out. The rules change depending on how many runs are scored. If the batsmen have scored between 0 and 15 runs they are allowed 3 good balls in which they must hit the ball and run, otherwise lose a wicket. If they have scored between 15-30 runs the batsmen have 2 good balls in which they must hit the ball and run, otherwise lose a wicket. Above 30 runs you must play hit and run, regardless of how the ball comes. Above 40 runs the batsmen are awarded a bonus, if not out, of 10 runs and then they must retire.

Pairs cricket

Variation of the game - 8 a-side / 6 a-side (normal cricket rules) This game is for adults and more able players. 16-20 overs per side. Normal cricket rules apply, except that batsmen retire at 25 or 30 runs, and can bat again if the whole team are bowled out before the overs are completed (optional rules). 16-over match, no bowler can bowl more than four overs. 20-over match, no bowler can bowl more than five overs.

The front foot driving game

Teams (6-8 a side). Each batsman has 6 balls. If he is out he scores -4. When all the batsmen have batted they switch to fielding. Each batsman has 4-6 balls. If he is out the next batsman comes in. If the batsman is not out, he returns to the back of the queue of waiting batsmen until it is his turn again. The batting team bats until all the batsmen are out. The last batsman has unlimited number of balls. If a batsman hits a 4 another ball is bowled. Individual Rules - Each individual bats until he is out. Once a batsman is out, all the fielders move clockwise, one round from their previous position.(B) Each individual batsman has 6-8 balls. If he is out he scores -4.

The quick singles game

This game can be played in teams (6-10 a-side) or in pairs (8-10 players). Rules of the game: There should be a batter at both ends. If playing in pairs, give each pair two or three wickets. If playing in teams, when a wicket falls it is the turn of the next batsman. Tip and run, or two or three balls to make a run. The coach throws either all front foot defence or all back foot defence bowls. The fielders must stay on the cones or with one hand on the wall until the ball is thrown, otherwise batsmen automatically get a two run bonus. Ways of getting out: Bowled, caught, run out, stumped, playing an attacking shot, or failing to score off the limited number of deliveries. The batsman can only score singles but the boundaries count for overthrows. Overthrows: side walls = 2 runs, back wall behind wicket keeper = 1 run, front wall = 4 runs (Unless you hit a 4 you can run singles to add to the side and back wall scores.) If a batsman leaves the ball it does not count and he does not have to run. If the batsman plays and misses it counts as a delivery

Two teams of players, fielders vs batters. Playing with four bases batters must try and get around without being bowled, caught or run out by the fielding side. Every time they succeed and pass the forth base they score a point for their team.

Coach stands in the middle of a semi circle of 6-10 players, holding a ball.One player throws a ball at the coach, who bats it away using the ball they are holding. This will send the ball off at a strange angle and make it difficult to catch. The person nearest to the ball should catch it.If they drop the ball then they move to the right hand side of the semi circle. The person at the far left of the semi circle at the end wins.

Kwik Cricket Conditioned games...

Divide players into two teams and then pair up all your players. Each pair should get to bat for two overs each. Each pair starts with 20 runs and can be out if they are bowled, caught, stumped, run out or if you hit your own wicket. Every time a batter is out 5 points are knocked off their total and batters swap places. The winning pair is the one which finishes with the most runs.

Each team starts with a score of 200 runs.Batsmen can be out in the usual ways, and also: (a) by hitting the ceiling of the hall, (b) by being caught off the walls, except when hitting a 6. The batsmen have unlimited wickets, if you are out you deduct 6 off the teams score.Scoring runs works in the following way :<BR>Back wall along the ground, score 4.<BR>Back wall in the air, score 6 (can not be caught off the back wall).<BR>Side walls, score 2 plus any additional singles that are run.<BR>Back wall behind the stumps, score 1 plus any additional singles that are run.<BR>Wides, byes and leg byes score 1 and an extra ball (be lenient with younger players/beginners)No LBW and Coach must always umpire and score. Batsmen bat together in pairs (e.g. four or five overs a pair, depending on time available.) A batsman can be run out at either end. Bowlers bowl six balls per over, always from the same end. Batsmen change ends either at the end of an over or when a wicket falls.<BR> All players including wicket keeper rotate clockwise after each over, unless you have a specialist wicket keeper.

Non-striker backing up.<br />4. Run the first run fast.<br />5. Do not run past the crease after one run (because you might have to run again.)<br />6. Run with bat arm stretched out in front of you.<br />7. Hold the bat handle at the end.<br />8. Run your bat in over the line.<br /><br />B. For fielders (creating pressure, stopping singles)<br />1. Walking in, Threatening<br />2. Pace to the ball.<br />3. Watch the ball into your hands under pressure.<br />4. Always back up other fielders and the wicket keeper.<br />5. Get to the bowlers end to take an incoming throw.<br />6. Know when not to throw.<br />7. Know when to throw over the top of the stumps and when to hit them.<br />8. Remain focused when under pressure.<br /><br />Think! I must stop the single and build pressure for the batting side. Then I will force them into losing a wicket - and maybe the match!

Make two teams of 6. The coach is the pitcher. He stands in a 5 x 5 yard area 10 yards from the wickets (5 cones in a row). Position one cone 10 yards from the wicket. The pitcher passes the ball from the mound in the direction of the wickets (line of discs). The batter must kick the ball and then run around the base, back to the wickets. He must be ready to face the next pitch which is delivered as soon as the pitcher receives the ball, passed back from the outfield. The batter continues to bat until he is bowled out (the pitcher knocks down the wicket) or caught by an outfielder. Continue until all batters on the team are out.

Survival Game Conditioned game...

Two teams with the coach bowling. All batters have 4 balls. Each wicket that falls means that team loses four runs. Catch after 1 bounce = out. Players bat until they are out but must retire at 20 runs (optional). Runs are only awarded if the ball is played through the cones. If the ball is wide, or left, then the batter may have another ball.

<br />Players take it in turns to throw the ball at stumps around in a square. If they hit the stumps the direction is reversed and the ball is thrown the other way. the ball should be thrown over arm and tried to keep in the square shape. A long barrier can be used to stop the ball go to far.

Front Foot Defensive Extras - ...

The defensive stroke should be played to a ball of good line and length. Players stand in a relaxed and balanced stance, head and eyes level. Back swing and step forward to meet the ball. As they prepare to strike the ball the front shoulder dips and the front knee bends. Shoulders rotate vertically and the bat decelerates on contact. The back heel should be raised to help get above the ball and players' bottom hand should be relaxed to avoid over hitting the ball.

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. Feeder drops ball in front of batter (with arm out horizontally, standing on the off side of the batsman for safety purposes). Batter steps towards the ball, and aim to drive the ball on the second bounce/half volley, driving the ball on the ground through the target zones. Each group needs 6 tennis balls. 6 feeds per batter rotate clockwise. Drill is best done in nets (2 grounds per net in opposite directions) .Encourage players to wear at least batting gloves when doing this drill.

Teams of 6-8 a side are split into two teams; batsmen and fielders. Each batsman has 6 balls to score as many runs as possible within the coned area only. If they are out they lose their runs and score -4 runs. When all the batsmen have batted they switch to fielding. If a batsman is not out they return to the back of the queue of the waiting batsman. The batting team bats until all the batsman are out.
