1v1 with libero support

Blue 1 is the feeder in this drill and alternates the pass left-right. Upon receiving the pass blue 2 runs forward and duels with the defender (red 2). Red 1 is libero (spare defender) and moves to cover and help to keep the attacker out in case of emergency. Repeat on other side. After 4 attacks each players rotate 1 position in a clock-wise direction.

4 vs 4 - Make the Space

4 attacking players against 4 defenders - with the attackers trying to score a goal. The attackers start on either wing and take it in turn to run forward and try to get past their opposite number. If they are unable to get past their marker the players should pass the ball across the line to a fellow attacker.

Knock on defence - covering defence

The blue team (back court players) are attacking and are passing the ball along the line, looking to find a chink in the defence so that they can pass the ball to either of the two forward green players (pivots). Meanwhile the blue defending players must work together and make good defending decisions. When an attacker comes forward a defender must step forward to mark the back court players while another defender moves across the cover the pivot.

Late Support

The wide attacker plays a one-two pass with the central attacking player. After this they then run forward and try to get past the left back. If they're unable to get past on their own they should wait for the support run from the central player who should aim to run between the defenders and play a jump shot on goal.

One on One with a covering defender

The feeders on the baseline and the outside of the 9 meter line take it in turns to feed the ball to the attacking runner (Blue 2). When the ball is played the attacker run to meet the pass. As they do so the defender (red 1) also runs to meet them. The attacker is looking to make a shot on goal with the defender aiming to show them to the outside of the court, making it difficult to shoot and ultimately dispossess the player with the ball. The second defender (red 2) is the covering man, blocking the attacker's view of goal and is only there to cover the first defender, not make the tackle. After a shot or a tackle has been made the drill flips and restarts on the opposite side of the court with the other line.

One on two - Defensive overload

The feeder in the center of the court plays the ball left and then right into the paths of the running attackers. The first wide defender goes to meet the ball straight away with the second, central, defender coming to cover and support the other defender after the attacker has crossed the 9m line. The drill ends when the ball is taken by the defender or after the attacker's shot on goal.

Run around - 2 vs 1

This starts off as a 1 vs 1 as the attacking players dribble the ball out around the cone and then run towards goal to beat the defender. However, the attacking players are allowed to make use of the spare man to get past the defender or if they feel that the passing option is being blocked they can go it alone.

Stretching the defence with passing.

The blue players must pass the ball between themselves with the intention of stretching the defenders as much as possible. When the center left two attacking players have the ball (blue 4 and 3) the first defender (red 1) covers the space.When the center right two players have the ball (blue 3 and 5) it is the second defender's (red 2) responsibility to cover the space. The defender who is not immediately defending should shuffle over to make sure that the defence is not leaving large gaps. The outlets are the left wing and right wings where the defenders can not go.

The two blue players stood on the wings of the court both have several balls at their feet and take it in turns to throw the ball into the central player. Once they have past the ball into the middle-man they should drive forwards, ready to receive the return pass, pivot and try to feed the ball into the red player on their side. Defenders must communicate amongst themselves to decide on which of them goes forwards to close down the oncoming player and which is remaining to cover the man on the edge of the D.

Try to get past - Libero support in defence

Three defending players, lined up outside your shooting circle, one feeder stood in the middle (could be the coach) and then two equal lines of attackers on both sides of the court. The attacking players take it in turns to attack. The first players passes the ball to blue 2 and then runs forward, looking for the return pass. The blue player then takes on their man in a 1v1 where the libero defender (red 2) moves over to cover and only helps if the blue player gets past the first defender.

Blue players 1, 2 and 3 stand in a line with a supply of ball to try and feed to blue player 4. The defending player (Red 1) must stay in front of the receiving player and mirror their movement across the court, preventing as many balls as possible from reaching blue player 4. The receiving player must change pace and direction in order to lose their marker but they are not allowed to step in front of the defender.
