Cross the Border

Teams play to bring the ball behind the line. Players are only allowed to pass the ball - absolutely no dribbling or no running with the ball allowed. Defenders can win the ball back by blocking their opponents or intercepting the ball.

Cross the line

In the goal area players are static and dribbling the ball on the spot. When the trainer blows their whistle the players must try to dribble the ball across a certain line without being tackled. Defenders must try to prevent players from getting past them.

Dare you dribble?

One defender stands in the middle in between the goal area and the center line. Their aim is to stop as many players as they can from dribbling from the goal area to the half way line but they can only tackle people as they run through the two cones. Once a player is tackled they then also become a defender.

Dribble Tag

All players except for two defenders are dribbling inside a half-court area. The two defenders start tagging the other players. Once tagged players must put their ball aside and help the taggers. The last player dribbling is the winner.

Dribbling duel

One player dribbles while their partner tries to get the ball from them. To start with players should only be shadowing one another - not actively trying to tackle the ball. Once players have become more confident at dribbling and shadowing you can then allow the defender to try and win the ball.

Hit the benches - Defence v Attack

The blue team are the attackers and the whites are defenders, working in one third of the court. Blue players must pass the ball around to create a good chance for throwing at the benches, all while staying behind a certain line. The white players' job is to protect the benches and block the shots.

Drawing in the defender - 3 vs...

Player 1 dribbles around their cone whilst player 2 sprints around their cone. Player 1 deliberately dribbles towards defender 1 in an attempt to draw the defender towards them. Meanwhile player 2 runs forward, looking to draw the defender away from player 3. Depending on which player defender 2 marks player 1 should pick out the unmarked player. This player should then shoot on the turn at goal.

As players run forward to defend they should think about their stance and approach: They should take small, fast steps (never jump) to avoid over-committing. Approach diagonally, facing towards the ball, and angling their body to direct their opponent away from the goal area. Keep their arms open, wide and high. Stand on the balls of their feet with knees slightly bent.

Player 1 dribbles around the cone and at the same time player 2 sprints around his cone. Player 1 deliberately dribbles towards defender 1, trying to draw them towards them, before passing to player 2 once the defender has committed to trying to mark him. Attacker 2 now throws at the goal.

Based on the defender's movement player 4 should decide whether to pass to player 6, player 5 or not pass at all and take the shot on themselves. Blue player 1 starts with the ball and moves to make their defender follow them out of position, once they've dragged them outside they pass to player 2 who does the same and then passes to player 3 who passes to player 4. At this stage the game becomes 'live'. Blue 6 is stood between the two defenders and blue 5 is ready to make a run down the outside. Depending on the decisions made by the defence player 4 can pass early to player 6, throw the ball into the path of player 5 or simply go it alone and take the shot on themselves.

Set up your players up in three equal lines. Only the player at the start of line 1 has a ball. Blue 1 starts the drill with a pass to blue 2 who runs onto the ball and tries to break past the two defenders. If they are unable to find space for the shot they must pass to player 3 who repeats the process. Drill continues in this way (blue1 - blue2 - blue3 - blue1...)until an opening for the shot has been created.

Player 1 acts as the feeder in this drill. Taking it in turns one attacking player from each side receives the pass and then runs on to try and get past the defender stood near the 7 meter line. If they get past the attacker should try and score a goal. Once they have had a shot players rotate - so the attacker becomes the defender and the defender joins the back of the attacking line.

Blue players pass the ball around the grid, always throwing the ball in front of the player so that they have to meet the ball. This time though there are 6 players stood between the outer edge players and three defenders who are working together to mark two players each. The central defender must only go up and down, always marking the central blue players. Defender 1 and 2 must work together and cross over so that player one is always marking the player on their right side and player two is always marking on the outside left.

Players take it in turns to attack in a 2 vs 1, with one player from the left pairing with the central player or a player from the right pairing with the central player (player 1 and 2 or player 2 and 3). Once players are past the defender they should have a shot on goal before retrieving the ball and rejoining the back of their respective line.

In this drill blue 2 is the feeder (devil's advocate). Their job is to pass the ball in between the defender and the attacker on both sides of the court. Whoever is first to the ball must pass the ball back to the feeder and return to their starting point.

Players stand in line waiting their turn to attack. The first player passes to player two in the middle who plays an immediate ball back into the path of the player who passed to them. This player should then catch the ball and shoot with a center shot on goal. Variations : - center shot when running - center shot hip height - center shot knee height   First without a defender, later with a passive defender who only shows the attacker where to throw : defender has hands high --&gt; attacker should decide for a shot at hip of knee height. Defender has hands low --&gt; attacket decedis to throw with a high shoulder height center shot or running shot.

To practice coming together players must side-step between the cones. When they come to the close together clones players should come together, jump towards one another and clap hands while jumping up. Players continue this pattern and and then run back to the start.

When the third player receives the ball on the left wing they should feint (either to go out or to go in) before then running towards the defender and shooting on goal. The blue players must pass the ball between themselves with the intention of stretching the defenders as much as possible. When the center left two attacking players have the ball (blue 4 and 3) the first defender (red 1) covers the space.When the center right two players have the ball (blue 3 and 5) it is the second defender's (red 2) responsibility to cover the space. The defender who is not immediately defending should shuffle over to make sure that the defence is not leaving large gaps. The outlets are the left wing and right wings where the defenders can not go.

Both sides line up facing one another, with the ball starting on opposite sides. The player who starts with the ball throws to the player opposite them who then returns the ball. They then throw the second player on the opposite side who also returns the ball. Finally they throw the ball across to the third player on the opposite side who then returns the ball.

Handball: Fast Break - Defence...

Have a line of attacking players all with a ball each standing on both sides of the court. Inside the 9m line will be two defenders, one on each side. The drill starts with the first attacker running at goal and shooting on goal. The defenders are allowed to obstruct the shot but not tackle. Once the ball is in the hands of the keeper they should throw it out to the defender who is making a fast break-away run up the court. After running to the half-way line the defender joins the back of the queue, the attacking player becomes the next defender and the drill begins again on the other side of the court.
