Anticipation and reactions

Player side steps until the coach drops a ball. The player must catch the ball before the second bounce. Players can also start from a stationary position with heels of the ground or hopping on one leg or criss crossing the legs or with player starting with their back to coach and the coach shouting out when throwing the ball.

Coordination / Fun Games

Basic Backhand Technique- Progression 2

Intention: Develop a basic backhand technique. Players in 2 lines on one side of the net, coach on the other side. Coach feeds simultaneously to the players in each line. Each player hits 3 balls and moves around to the other side of the court and collects 3 balls from the other.

Cross Court Backhand/Backhand

Coach feeds the ball down the line to player 1 who plays a deep cross court backhand (shot 1). Player 2 returns also playing a deep cross court backhand (shot 2). Player 1 then plays a backhand down the line (shot 3) back to the coach. The drill is continuous playing the same shots. Rotate players 1 and 2.

-The coach feeds down the line, the player runs to hit the ball cross court into the target area.First player to 3 shots (or higher if more advanced players) wins the game.-The drill can then be run similarly from the backhand corner.

Developing Coordination- Progression 2

Intention: Develop sending and receiving skills through the use of progressive coordination exercises. Following progression 1 Players stand facing each other on the inside and outside tramlines respectively (in a ready, athletic, gorilla position) Players have two balls, one ball each, and throw the balls underarm between each other. The balls must bounce once before the partner catches the ball. Each player must throw the ball with their right hand and catch the other ball with their left. Once the ball has been caught it must be passed between the hands in preparation for the throw and free up the left hand for the catch. As players master a rhythm, they attempt to increase the tempo.

Coach, 3 players, and a basket of balls. Players 1,2 and 3 line up on the baseline. The coach feeds 3 balls. Players 1 and 2 play deeps forehands, and player 3 a deep backhand. Coach feeds 3 balls. Players 1 and 2 play a mid court forehand, and player 3 a mid court backhand. Coach feeds 3 balls. Players 1 and 2 play a forehand volley, and player 3 a backhand volley. Coach feeds 3 high balls for all players to play forehand smashes. Players rotate positions and return to starting point. Drill continues.

-One player is positioned on the service line, the other closer to the net.-Player 1 lobs every second shot and player 2 hits alternately volleys and smashes.-This is a warm up drill and players focus on keeping the ball in play.-The drill can be done with or without rackets.-Players swop round after approximately 3 minutes.

-The players are in pairs in this volley race.- Make sure players stay in the service box area and that players don't hit each other with the ball.- At first forehand volleys only.-The pair to have made the most volleys in 30secs wins.This can then be done with backhand volleys and various variations.

Rally with 3 zones Forehand Dr...

2 players rally together in cross court direction. 3 zones are set on each player’s side (Red, Yellow, Green). Player has to hit particular shot according to the opponent’s balls placement. If the ball lands in the red zone player hits defensive/neutral shot. If the ball lands in the yellow zone player hits neutral/offensive shot. If the ball lands in the green zone player has to attack it.Drill specifications:30-60 seconds and switch4 players can work on the court at the same time while others can have different duties. Coach can put 2 players next to the net post and let them say “stop” when the ball goes over the net. This is the signal for the player and feedback at the same time of their perception time. If there are more players on the court coach can make them do some fitness drill or put them far behind the hitting players and work on ball perception on their own.

Players should use good quick footwork to get their feet in the correct position around the ball to play the shots. The aim is to encourage players to progressively attack on the move. Coach feeds 3 balls to 3 players. Feed 1 to player A at the net to play a forehand cross court volley. Feed 2 to player B to play a mid court forehand shot down the court. Feed 3 to player C to the corner of the court on the baseline, to play a forehand pass down the line. The drill should be continuous so as player A joins the queue. Player B moves to feed 1, player C to feed 2, player D to feed 3, so that the drill is continuous.

Player A runs to hit a forehand down the court, and returns to the starting position.<br /><br /> Coach then feeds a 2nd ball mid court one bounce towards the tramline for Player A to hit down the court. Player does not return to starting position.<br /><br /> Coach moves backwards along the central service box line to feed a 3rd ball for player A to run onto and hit down the court. After this shot player retreats to the back of the queue. Player B steps in for the drill to be repeated.

2 players play points against each other. Player A has to finish the point in 3 shots to win.Drill specifications:2-3 points and switchPoints are short so players can play few rallies in a row before they switch. With more players on the court waiting players should perform physical activities to improve footwork or they can observe other players to learn different tactical approaches.

One player stands in the deuce corner and rallies with their partner. The player in the deuce corner hits three consecutive forehands to the different zones (cross court, centre and down the line). The player at this end meanwhile, hits all of the balls to the deuce corner.

The coach stands on the service line (ad side), and the player starts from the baseline. The coach serves to the T, so that the players hits a forehand return cross-court. After successful hit into the zone, the player moves forward between service line and baseline, and hits another return. After successful hit into the zone, the player moves forward to the service line to execute another return.

Coach feeds 3 balls to the player's deuce side down the line. Standing on the base line, the player moves to their right to meet the ball on their forehand side. The player then returns the ball hitting forehand cross court to the corner of the deuce side between cones. he/she then moves back to the centre of the base line. The coach then feeds the next ball on the players deuce side service line. The player moves foreward and returns using a forehand cross court short to the corner of the deuce side. Player then returns back to the centre of the baseline. Coach then feeds the third ball a few feet beyond the net. Players moves to meet it and agins, using a forehand cross court shot, returns the ball beteen the cones set up on the cross court shot side.

Coach, 4 players, and a basket of tennis balls. Player 1 starts off on the centre of the baseline. Coach feeds 3 balls across the court from the players left to right, for the player to run on to and play 3 deep forehand returns. Player 1 joins the queue and player 2 steps on for the drill to be repeated. Drill continues until all 4 players have had a turn. Repeat the drill.

Players play the point out from their hand in a full court as normal.If they win the point with a clear winner or by forcing an error from their opponent they get plus 1 point. However, if they make an unforced error of any kind, they get minus 1 point.Players can play until 1 player reaches plus or minus 7 points.

Continuous 1 vs 1 (3 players) ...

1 vs 1, with a second person at one end who takes over as soon as the point has finished. Therefore 1 person plays continuously, whereas the other 2 switch every point.The player at the 2 person end starts with the ball and the other player starts on the left hand side of court. The ball is played crosscourt to the right corner for the continuous player to run onto. Players then rally until the point is won. Then revese the direction of the run in.Rotate between the 3 players so that each person has a turn at being the continuous player.

The coach feeds 2 balls to the deuce side. The player hits forehand approach and forehand volley to the ad side, then repeats the same pattern from the center of the court and from the ad side.

The player starts on the baseline and is fed 3 balls all to the advantage side. The balls should be fed deep, medium and then short. The player hits all of the balls backhand down the line and moves forward ready for the next ball.

Player 1 is working in the whole court but primarily in the red target zone, hitting ONLY fhs: 1 fh cross, and 1 fh inside out. Player 2 is working in the fh corner and is hitting a forehand back to the centre of the court, middle of the red target zone. Player 3 is working in the bh corner and is hitting a backhand down the line to the outer edge of the red target zone. Player 3 feeds the ball in down the line, player 1 hits a fh cross, player 2 hits a fh down the middle, player 1 runs around the ball and hits an inside out fh back to player 3, and the pattern repeats.

The coach feeds a drop-shot from the basket. Players 1 and 2 are at the same end as the coach and are positioned at the net.Player 3 must run forwards to try to get to the drop-shot and play it up to either of the players at the net.The players at the net must lob-volley the ball back over player 3's head. Player must then 3 run back to chase the ball hitting it again to either of the players at the net, who then drop volleys this ball.The point continues in this way until an unforced error is made or player 3 cannot run anymore!

Psychology in tennis HELP! My daughter gets upset...

Psychology in tennis HELP!!! I have a daughter who is an excellent player who only started playing tennis seriously last yr at the age of 13. She is a much better player than all the people she has completed against in matches but always loses due to over hitting and getting upset if the wrong call is made (which happens frequently due to how fast she hits and serves) do we need some sort of psychological help for this. what is the best way to get this... books, councilling ??? any help would be most appreciated thanks

What is my fault? Difficulty coaching some of the older players - advice?

Helo, my name is Fernando, I am a Spanish tennis teacher who started teaching six months ago. I am working in a public sportcenter and I am having some problems with adults. When I started I realiced that the students were used to playing tennis without any control. Young students told me that the other teacher only used to leave them play - he rarely explained them how to hit the ball. Consequently the do enjoy my clases and they are learning a lot and impoving their level of tennis. So far so good, but the problem is that with the adults I have the impression that they don´t like my clases. In fact some of them left the group at the begining. I try to mix different kinds of drills during the class and I usually finish it with a game like for example 21, winner........ But it seems that they don´t enjoy it. During the exercises most of them don´t try to do what I tell them. As a result, they don´t have a good level of tennis. But as far as I know, the other teacher was a tennis player who uses to play against them during the clases. As this is my first time teaching tennis, I don´t fell confidence and that is the reason whay I do´t like to play against them. Appart from that I think that this is not my role as a teacher. So I would like you to tell me how to deal with that situation. I don´t care if they leave me because this is not going to affect my job, but i wouldn´t like them to leave just because I like tennis and I like teaching tennis. Thank you very much for your help.
