Attacking Midcourt Balls

This drill should be used to help players deal with easy balls and get them to attack the ball. The coach starts the drill with a mid-court feed, at various heights. The player has to hit the ball to the targets either deep or angled. The coach feeds 6 balls and then the next player starts.

Building points through deep cross court shots

The coach feeds the ball to team A, they then have to hit it into the target area cross court. -Player from team B hits down the line if possible, however if under pressure from the depth or pace of the shot,then player B should play cross court or down the middle.Team A are hitting mostly cross court.

Good court positioning

-Learning correct positions enhances court coverage and enables the player to respond to the most likely shot placements by the opponent.-Place 4 markers in a diamond shape around the centre of the baseline. Start by the coach telling the player to move to a correct marker after each shot.(Using forward, back, left, right commands.

Ground strokes under pressure

-Feeder hits first ball to forehand alley.-The second ball if fed to backhand alley.-The third feed goes deep to the forehand side.

Shot selection

-Players play in pairs as a team and alternate shots scoring a point each time a shot is hit in the back 1/3 of the court.-If a ball is hit short the players can attack. -Attacking shots should also be hit deep (1/3 back of court) and if they are hit as outright winners the team will score an extra 3 points.-First side to 7 points wins the game.-The game can also be started with service and then carried on as described above.

Topspin Lob

The coach feeds a deep ball to hitters. Players must hit a topspin lob and then return to the back of the line after their shot. With more advanced players the coach should feed the balls from the back of the opposite side of the court.

<BR>-The coach feeds down the line, the player runs to hit the ball cross court into the target area.<BR>First player to 3 shots (or higher if more advanced players) wins the game.<BR>-The drill can then be run similarly from the backhand corner.

Split the players into 2 equal groups, Both hitting forehands. Coach feeds left then right. Players have to move out to the ball and try to hit the ball into the coned are down the line. Play first team to score 10 points.

Cones are set on the deuce side (deep and short). The player stands on the service line and the coach feeds high ball to the forehand side. The player executes forehand drive in the air deep cross-court and moves forward, before the coach feeds another ball to the backhand side.The player finishes with backhand drop-volley down the line.

Player A rallys with player B, and C with D (hitting cross court). Each player hits a deep forehand beyond the disc. The aim of the drill is to keep the rally going, stepping outside the line of the ball to return to your partner.

Coach is stationed at position 2 while players start off forehand alley corner moves and executes first shot near middle baseline and second shot mid-court short ball.

Cones are set in the deep corner (ad side). The player serves from the ad side and moves to the net, and the coach feeds the ball to the ad side. The player hits backhand half volley deep cross court and takes proper position at the net.

Cones are set in the deuce deep area. The coach feeds balls to the forehand or backhand and the player hits the ball while avoiding the deep deuce corner.

Split the group into 2 teams. One of each team goeas and stands in the box on the opposite side of the net and has to try and return the ball down the line each time. They are not allowed out of the box to start with. The Game. Coach feeds alternate sides.

With more players coach can set up 2 lines to work on forehand and backhand at the same time but it requires good feeding skills to keep the patterns in a right pace. Otherwise players should perform physical drills e.g core strength to improve power of the groundstrokes.

Players are working in threes with player 1 working in the whole court against players 2 and 3.Players are rallying co-operatively but with players 2 and 3 moving player 1 around the court a little. Player 1 can hit to either side in any order.If player 1 hits a ball that lands long they get 2 points, beyond the service line but before the longline they get 1 point, in the service box they get no points.Should they miss a ball long or wide they get minus 1 point, and in the net minus 2 points.Players 2 and 3 must count out loud, and player 1 is trying to get to 25 points as quickly as possible. The length of time it takes is timed and players can compete within themselves in the 3 or combined against other courts if the group is larger.
