Anticipation and reactions

Player side steps until the coach drops a ball. The player must catch the ball before the second bounce. Players can also start from a stationary position with heels of the ground or hopping on one leg or criss crossing the legs or with player starting with their back to coach and the coach shouting out when throwing the ball.

Coordination / Fun Games

Egg and spoon run

Players start on the baseline with a ball on their racket strings. They run up to the net where they swap over the ball with the player on the opposite side of the net. They then run back to the baseline.

Line and Drop

Coach feeds a long ball across the court. Players have to run across the court to play the ball deep down the line and then across to the net to play a short drop shot down the line. Each player hits the 2 shots and then go to the back of the queue.

Movement

Lob Game

-The game has two teams of four players each.-Each team consists of two lobbers and two smashers.The smashers must stand in their respective service courts.-Points are scored every time a lob falls between the base line and the service line.The baseliners must hit the ball after one bounce. Points are lost as in normal tennis.-First team to 5 wins.-The baseliners and the smashers swop over for the next game.

Touch and Smash

-Player touches net with racket then coach puts up the lob. The player hits the smash into the back 1/4 of the court.-On the second feed the player lets the ball bounce before the smash.

Yo - Yo

1) Teacher alternates short drop shot and deep lob feeds from the basket.Also alternates forehand, backhand.2)Player hits the short ball to a down the line target as an approach shot 3) Player will then move back for the smash.4) The smash is hit cross court

Movement

Drop The Volley Rally Drills -...

Set up as shown with three cones close to the net, with these cones being the player's target on their second shot. Player and coach stand at the net, and the coach feeds the ball to the forehand side.The Player hits a forehand volley to the coach who then hits it back to the backhand side, where the player must react quickly to backhand drop volley the ball cross-court, aiming to get the ball in between the three cones.

Player stays behind the baseline.Player imitates the movement to the right side using a drop step.Drop step means that a player should move their back leg under their body and turn it to the hitting side to improve acceleration onto the ball.

The player stands on the baseline. Cones mark the deep zone. The coach stands close to the net and feeds a drop shot to the backhand side and takes the racquet up. The player sprints forward and hits deep backhand slice lob off drop shot.

The player stands in one corner of the court, with the coach on the opposite side of the baseline. The coach drops the ball from shoulder height and the player must sprint across the baseline and hit the ball, before returning to their starting position.

The coach feeds the ball to the backhand side, and the player hits backhand drop shot down the line and moves forward. The coach comes then to the net and feeds the ball to the backhand side. The player finishes with backhand volley lob cross-court.

Play on a 1/2 court (so you can have two games going at the same time).2 players close to the net. Start the point from 1 player balancing the ball on the net and letting go. When the ball drops into the court it is allowed to bounce once.After this they play a volley rally over the net to try and win the point.

Coach stands close to the net and feeds balls close to the net on the player's side of the court to mimic a drop shot. Starting at the baseline the player has to run and hit a return drop shot down the line. Cones should be set out to give the player a target to aim for.

Player stands on the baseline. Coach feeds an easy ball and stays on the baseline or moves far behind it. Player has to make proper decision according to the coach’s position. If the coach is on the baseline player should attack the easy ball with a powerful groundstroke. If the coach moves far behind the baseline player should hit a drop shot.Drill specifications:4 repetitions per setSmall number of repetitions is required to achieve quality work. Peripheral vision is one of the skills that is necessary to effectively execute offensive strokes. Waiting players should work on making quick decisions after the visual sign so coach should prepare physical drills based on quick reaction.

The player stands on the baseline and the coach stands close to the net. The coach feeds drop shot to the backhand side. The player sprints forward and hits deep backhand slice down the line off drop shot.

Player faces the coach while keeping one hand on coach's hand. Coach drops the ball. Player's goal is to react quickly and catch the ball before it bounces. Coach should encourage players to bend their knees to improve reaction time.

Deep zone and angle zone are set by cones. Coach feeds balls to one side. Player performs tactical pattern based on deep down the line shot, deep cross court shot, and drop shot down the line.Drill specifications:1-2 repetitions per set1-2 patterns in a row is a number that each players should hit. With more players coach can set up 2 lines to work on forehand and backhand at the same time but it requires good feeding skills to keep the patterns in a right pace. Waiting players can perform physical drills or they can imitate well-disguised drop shot to get comfortable with the last-second change of grip and drop shot motion.

Player 1 is feeding and can start halfway between the service line and the net with arms outstretched at shoulder height.Player 2 is working, starting in the ready position on the baseline, but remaining active on the spot.Player 1 must drop either of the 2 balls they have outstretched in their hands. As soon as player 2 sees this they must sprint forwards and try to get to the ball after 1 bounce.They then throw the ball back to player 1 and shuffle their feet moving backwards in a relaxed way to get into the start position for the next feed.

2 players rally together in cross court direction. Player A picks the right moment to surprise the opponent and hits the drop shot down the line.Drill specifications:1 minute and switch4 players can work on forehands and backhands at the same time so 1 minute periods for switching are appropriate. Waiting players can perform some footwork exercises on the ladder to keep the feet active or they can imitate drop shot to get more comfortable with disguising the shot and changing the grip right before the point of contact.

After successful angle shot player finishes the next ball with drop shot down the line.Drill specifications:1 point and switchWhile 2 players are hitting on the court others can work on different skills. Physical activites are always good to incorporate but because of the drop shot included in this pattern, waiting players can cooperate and sharp this skill (player A is throwing the ball and player B is softly hitting drop shots back to the feeder).

Best player - bad attitude/determination?

I have a learner that is super talented, he gets the game, he handles pace, power and depth well. He is aggressive and tennis just comes naturally when it comes to this kid but he lacks determination. I am really struggling to keep him motivated not to loose focus or to let one mistake make his shoulders hang for the rest of the lesson. Footwork is unfortunately a big problem and when he loses a point it's even worse, this kid is just draining me mentally every session, its a mental thing but i'm having trouble defeating it. If i'm too hard on him, he closes down and might as well stop and if i play too much and don't push him, he plays with no effort and just hit very sloppy shots. I do know that his situation at home is not good and i think it has a lot to do with his bad attitude on the court but i really need some advise, this is my hardest lesson to plan, what is most important about my lesson with a student with a bad attitude, no temper but just unmotivated and i don't want to give up because this kid really has the talent...he really can be the next junior champion in Africa if he really wants to. Would really appreciate some tips from the professionals that dealt with this before.

Psychology in tennis HELP!!! I have a daughter who is an excellent player who only started playing tennis seriously last yr at the age of 13.
