3 variations on the forehand side

Cones are set in the deuce corner. The coach feeds 3 balls to the forehand side. The player executes forehand after the bounce, forehand drive in the air, and forehand volley in cross-court direction.

The player starts behind the service line and the coach feeds high ball to the forehand side. The player executes forehand drive deep cross-court and moves to the net. The coach feeds another ball to forehand side and the player then finishes with forehand stop-volley cross-court.

Player stands behind the service line. Coach hits all the balls high to the forehand side. Player using forehand drive hits 2 shots to the deuce and 2 shots to the ad side.

Cones are set on the deuce side (deep and short). The player stands on the service line and the coach feeds high ball to the forehand side. The player executes forehand drive in the air deep cross-court and moves forward, before the coach feeds another ball to the backhand side.The player finishes with backhand drop-volley down the line.

Don't let it bounce

Player stands on the baseline. Coach feeds a moonball. Player moves inside the baseline and hits a groundstroke drive in the air. Drill specifications: 1-4 repetitions per set With less players on the court coach can increase the number of repetitions to allow players to hit few strokes in a row. Waiting players can do figure 8 drill around the cones to work on the important aspect of the forehand in the air - adjustment steps. With more players coach can make them switch after one shot to keep the drill dynamic and improve anaerobic endurance at the same time.

Players move in from no mans land and executes forehand drive volley down the line.

One Regular, One Drive

The player stands on the baseline, and the coach faces the player. The coach throws balls to the deuce side, and the player alternates forehand after the bounce and forehand in the air. Ability to play offensive forehands in the air is more and more important in modern tennis. Players have to learn how to position to the ball to hit forcing shots even while being just in front of the baseline

The player serves wide from the deuce side and the coach feeds high ball to the forehand side. The player moves forward and hits forehand drive in the air to the ad side.

Player rallies with coach from the baseline on the ad side. Player hits 2 backhands cross-court. The next ball is played high by coach. Player steps in and hits forehand drive inside out and continues the rally.

Setting an environment, where the player is forced to react and use drive in the air, is an opportunity to develop tactical awareness.

The coach demonstrates how to execute backhand drive in the air and emphasizes 4 major steps: shoulder turn with backswing, positioning, high point of contact and weight transfer. Players shadows the stroke to get the feeling of a motion.Demonstration of a new skill can accelerate the learning process or it can prevent players from reaching higher levels. While waiting for own turn players should perform specific fitness drills that will lead to the improvements in their games. Jump rope or footwork on the ladder are quick and dynamic exercises that can be used to achieve these goals.

Is there a drill to involve four or five players to teach a passing shot? Situation would be opponent at or approaching the net and plays a poor approach.

How to improve a backhand - with topspin and extension?

I have a student who use to hit the two hands backhand too close of the body and without extensión. She is 16 years old and a good junior player. Also she tend to hit her backhand flat and we are working to combine more with topspin. Do you know how she could improve these two aspects? Thanks,Victor.
