Drop Step Movement - Tennis Dr...

Player stays behind the baseline.Player imitates the movement to the right side using a drop step.Drop step means that a player should move their back leg under their body and turn it to the hitting side to improve acceleration onto the ball.

'X' movement Movement - Tennis...

Purpose:learn to move in an "X" pattern under pressure of movement.Coach feeds the ball in the sequence 1,2,3,4 for each player in turn. Coach feeds high deep balls to points 1,3 and shorter feeds to 2,4.Exact pattern of 1,2,3,4 maintained throughout.Player hits feeds 1,3 deep crosscourt. Feeds 2,4 down the line. Feed in sets of 16 balls.

Player starts in the middle behind the baseline.Coach feeds balls alternately to the forehand and backhand.The player should move in a smile shape around the baseline, with the tops of the smile being where they hit the ball and the bottom of the smile their recovery position.

2 teams. One team has only 2 people who are gladiators. The other 4 have to balance the ball on their racquets and put it in the hoop without being tagged. When they are tagged they have to go back to the bucket to start again. Give them 2 minutes then stop.

The player stands in one corner of the court, with the coach on the opposite side of the baseline. The coach drops the ball from shoulder height and the player must sprint across the baseline and hit the ball, before returning to their starting position.

Coach feeds the ball to the backhand side, with the player just behind the baseline, slightly to the backhand side. Player runs out to the left, around the ball so that they use a forehand instead of a backhand, then recover their position to the starting position and run out for a second and third time. After the third time they go past the middle as though the next shot was coming to their forehand side.For the first two shots they hit the ball crosscourt and then the last one is down the line.

<BR>-Player 2 starts with a second serve to advantage court.<BR>-Returner hits a lob return over player 1s head and follows it into the net.<Br>-Player 2 chases the lob and returns it down the line.<BR>-Player 1 moves to hot seat in the middle.<br>-Returner hits cross court volley to player 1.<BR>-Player 2 comes to net and the point is played out.<BR>-The same drill can be repeated on the deuce side of the court.

Coach feeds an easy ball down the middle of the court. Player moves forward and hits an agressive forehand to the deuce side. Player then moves forward to take up a proper position at the net.

Ball roll Movement - Tennis Dr...

Player 1 is feeding from the service box and player 2 starts on the baseline T in the ready position.Player 1 rolls tennis balls along the ground, in a random pattern, one after the other and player 2 must move to each ball, stop it with their hand before it goes outside the singles tramlines or baseline.After stopping the ball player 2 should roll it back to player 1 who can then roll the next ball.

Both players start at service line. Red 1 has to hit a ground stroke and then approach the net and play a volley back to Blue 1 and then return to service line. Repeat 6-10 shots then stop for Blue 1 to continue drill.

Recovery Habits - Backhand Mov...

This drill teaches how to achieve good positioning on the court. Coach tosses balls to the one side, and the player hits the ball and recovers to the proper spot. If the shot is cross court (yellow cone), player recovers to the closer (yellow) cone. If the shot is down the line to the red cone, player has to go to the further (red) cone.

Coach demonstrates proper footwork to hit forehand inside out/in. Players try to imitate this footwork without hitting the ball to make it more natural. Players take big cross over step behind and jump from both legs to achieve stable position before imitating hitting the ball.

TacticEncourage volley reactions and movement.DescriptionPlayer 1 and 2 are volleying to each other, player 3 is behind player 1. Player 1 will dummy the ball. Player 3 will try to volley it back to player 2.

Fast team work

-Players rally on a full court.-There can be two or more players on each side of the net starting from the baseline.-Using one racket per team the first player hits one shot and passes the racket to the next team player.-Points are won if the opposing side hits the ball outside of singles court or into the net.

Players start off on centre and hit 3 shots: Forehand crosscourt, backhand down the line and forehand crosscourt. (All shots back to coach position 3)

Groundstrokes, Inside-out forehands

-Players work on ground strokes and depth, aiming to hit beyond the service line.Possibly put targets down.-After rotations, swap to backhand. - Players no.1 and no.6 can hit inside-out forehands depending on ability.

Rally Drills

Passing shots

Starting with a feed to either forehand or backhand at random players play their first shot down the line after which the players can play out the point. No lobs allowed.

Total tennis through throwing

-The players only use the service box and play without rackets.-Start with an over-arm throw from behind the service line (as if serving) and play out a rally with normal tennis rules.-When the player catches the ball they can only hold it for 1 second. When the player has the ball they cannot move there feet!-If the ball bounces they must use under-arm throws. If they catch it before bouncing, they can throw over-arm (as if volleying before bounce!)-First player to 7 points wins, as in the tie-break.

Coordination / Fun Games

Under pressure ground strokes

-Rally until a mistake is made by the baseliner.-Baseliners swap out on mistakes.-Volley player swaps after 2-3 minutes.

Rally Drills

Volleys whilst moving as a team

-Players hit 2 half volleys each aiming at the targets, then move to alternate line.-All players in line shadow move behind hitters.-The same can be done with players at the net volleying.

Catapult serve is a good learning point?

I coach 4-7 year olds, and when I'm teaching serves I usually start with the throwing technique without a racket, before introducing the ball toss. Someone has suggested I teach a catapult serve as a part of the learning process. I personally think this would teach bad habits as there is no toss up. Any opinions on this? Thx
