
The game continues with the same setup as the whole, but the players are now locked into their zones. Emphasis on the centre backs splitting quickly when the goalkeeper has the ball and the wide players (acting as full backs) positioning around the edge of the third as shown in the diagram. Progression 1: Allow a midfielder to drop into defensive third when goalkeeper has the ball and also allow an opposition midfielder to push in and press. Progression 2: Allow a midfielder to enter the attacking zone to support striker when on the attack. Progression 3: Allow both opposing midfielders to enter the defensive zone to press when the ball is being played out from the back. This creates a 3v3 situation when a midfielder drops in, making playing out more challenging and encouraging the clever use of the wide players.
