Setup Place one ball in front of the goal, roughly 10 yards away. Instructions Split the group into two team, one attackers, one defenders, and make them form two lines. Also put one player in goal. When the coach blows their whistle, the first play player in each row will make a run to the ball. The attacker must try to shoot at goal, whilst the defenders job is to prevent the attacker from taking a shot by either blocking or tackling. The phase is complete once the attacker `loses` possession of the ball. Variations Ask the players to run towards the ball from various angles Place cones down for each player to run around before reaching the ball Move the ball closer/further away to test acceleration/sprint speeds Coaching Points Encourage the attacking player to shot at the first opportunity, first touch if possible Although a clearance may be their only option in some cases, encourage the defender to win the ball and retain possession whenever possible Ensure the defender is tackling/blocking cleanly, no fouls permitted
