Nearest player closes down quickly, look at body shape, where to âforceâ the striker. Make play predictable. Second defender supports first defender working off his/her body position. Third defender keeps aware of oppositions support runs etc. - offers communication regarding when to step and when to hold, staying compact. Awareness of offsides, explain âOffside is our friendâ, can they recognise when to let players run beyond and when to track runners? When possession is regained the need to dictate the tempo of the play is paramount -explain the concept of counter attacking at speed.
