This drill focuses on defending against counter attacks. The aim is for the black team to maintain poseesion in the blue sqaure. Once the whites intercept the ball they can then play the ball out to their attackers. 4 blacks from the square then have to make recovery runs to aid their defence while the 2 whites from the square can join the attacks. The aim is for the defence to slow the attack to allow time for thier 4 players to get back behind the ball and to avoid the whites being able to score. This drill also helps work on players fitness as this is key as its important that players can maintain their recovery runs throughout a game.
Force the attackers wide as you can use the touchline as a second defender helping to slow the attack. Speed in the recovery runs are important to ensure the attackers cant capitalise on thier overload. Due to the overload its important to know where all the opponents are so that as you close down the opponent in possesion you can cut out passing lines. For the attackers its key to make sure each pass is effective and quick so that the oppoents dont have time to recover.
