Defending in a low block to attack: How do you set up to defend in your half to win the ball and counter?

DESCRIPTION

This practice reflects our team’s game model of defending in a compact low–mid block within a 4-4-2 diamond and counter-attacking quickly into wide areas. The aim is to deny central penetration, force play wide and regain possession before breaking forward. Key coaching factors include maintaining compact distances between units, preventing passes into central areas and recognising pressing triggers such as a poor touch, slow pass or backwards pass. When the ball travels to the full-back, the nearest midfielder engages while the team shuffles across to protect central spaces. If the opposition play through the middle too easily, the principle of play may be adjusted by reducing unit distances or increasing pressure on the deepest midfielder. The practice can be adapted to 5v5 by using target players in wide channels to encourage quick counters, and to 7v7 with wider areas to replicate match spaces. Player roles emphasise compact defending, coordinated pressing and immediate forward support on regaining possession.

COACHING POINTS

Defending team must prevent the ball going into middle area, and allow the ball to go wide. Keep compact as a unit. When ball travels to full back, closest midfielder engages and shows down the line. Team shuffles across to prevent any spaces and gaps. Defending team must be aggressive, press on triggers such as bad touch, slow pass, backwards pass. Good body shape when defending, get opponents head down, arms length approach when faced up. When blue team win the ball, they must counter quickly into the goals. Vertical forward thinking passes.
